Women's Volleyball battles with #12 Aquinas but falls short 3-1

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Women's Volleyball welcomed nationally ranked Aquinas and battled them in a tough back-and-forth contest but falling 3-1 in four sets. Coming into this match, Aquinas was on a 50-set win streak that was eventually snapped at 51 in the second set of tonight's match. Aubrey Johnson continued to shine for the Golden Eagles as she led the way with a match high 21 kills while also adding 17 digs. Women's Volleyball hits the road for their final road match of the regular season as they take on Madonna on Friday, November 1 at 7 p.m.

Game Recap: #12 Aquinas – 3 Cornerstone – 1 (20-25, 25-22, 20-25, 25-14)
 
First Set: #12 Aquinas – 25 Cornerstone - 20
  • Aquinas and Cornerstone started off close as a block from Kylie Barron and Jada Thomas made it 2-2 early.
  • The first set continued to go back-and-forth as the Golden Eagles won the long rally with a kill from Emmalee Murphy to give Cornerstone a 6-5 lead.
  • An Aubrey Lenz service ace sparked a small Golden Eagle run as Aubrey Johnson netted a kill to make it 10-7 Cornerstone.
  • Aquinas continued to turn to Mallory Keller to stop any Golden Eagle run as her kill made it 12-10.
  • The set continued to be hard fought as the Golden Eagles find themselves with another long rally victory as Kylie Barron records a kill to make it 16-13.
  • The Saints responded with a 4-0 run that forced the Golden Eagles into their first timeout as they now lead 17-16
  • The Saints continued to hold off the Golden Eagles as back-to-back kills made it 21-19 as Cornerstone called their final timeout.
  • Aquinas finished off the first set on a 4-0 run highlighted by a final point service ace to win it 25-20.
 
Second Set: Cornerstone – 25 #12 Aquinas - 22
  • Like the first set, the start of the second was close as a kill from Aubrey Johnson tied it at two.
  • After Aquinas took an early 6-4 lead, the Golden Eagles took advantage of two Saints errors to tie it at six.
  • Aubrey Johnson continued to rack up the kills for the Golden Eagles as three straight kills gave Cornerstone a 10-8 lead.
  • An Aquinas 5-0 run saw them grow their lead 15-11 over the Golden Eagles.
  • The Golden Eagles continued to stick around and battle as kills from Jada Thomas and Aubrey Johnson cut into the Saints lead 18-17.
  • A big 4-0 Golden Eagle run highlighted by kills from Aubrey Johnson and Kylie Barron made it 22-20 Cornerstone as Aquinas called a timeout after an Aubrey Johnson service ace.
  • The Golden Eagles snap Aquinas's 51 set win streak as they take the second set 25-22 after back-to-back Saint errors.
 
Third Set: #12 Aquinas – 25 Cornerstone - 20
  • The Golden Eagles kept their momentum into the third set as they opened on a 3-1 run thanks to a service ace from Aubrey Johnson and a block from Kylie Barron and Aubrey Lenz.
  • The set continued to go back-and-forth as a Saints kill from Jenna Lee sees them ahead 6-5.
  • The Saints continued to pull ahead of the Golden Eagles as they are the first to 10 as they lead 10-6.
  • Right out of the timeout, the Golden Eagles go on a 3-0 run highlighted by a Gabby VerBerkmoes solo block to make it 11-9 Aquinas.
  • Cornerstone continued to battle back as a solo block from Aubrey Johnson made it 13-12 Aquinas.
  • Aubrey Johnson and Kylie Barron tie the match at 14 as they record back-to-back kills.
  • No one better than Mallory Keller to end a Golden Eagle run as her kill made it 17-16 Aquinas.
  • A Gabby VerBerkmoes solo block and a Saint attack error gave Cornerstone their first lead of the set 18-17 as Aquinas called a timeout.
  • After a couple Golden Eagle errors, the Saints retake the lead 22-20 late.
  • The errors continued for the Golden Eagles as three more gave Aquinas a 25-20 set three victory.
 
Fourth Set: #12 Aquinas – 25 Cornerstone - 14
  • Aquinas opened the fourth set on a 5-2 run thank to multiple kills.
  • The Golden Eagles were forced to a call a timeout as the Saints extended their lead 8-4.
  • It continued to be all Aquinas in the fourth set as a couple kills and a block made it 13-5.
  • The Saints forced Cornerstone into their final timeout of the set as a tip kill sees Aquinas lead 18-9 late.
  • Kylie Barron recorded back-to-back kills for the Golden Eagles to make it 19-12.
  • Aquinas closes out the fourth set with a 25-14 victory.
