SYLVANIA, Ohio. – Men's Soccer found themselves on the road for another WHAC matchup against the Gray Wolves of Lourdes University. An early and energetic start by the Golden Eagles fell off, as Lourdes found the back of the net early in the eight minute to make the match 1-0. Cornerstone would tie up the match 1-1 in the first half on a goal from Calvin Curtis. The third goal of the game came right before the end of the first half from the Gray Wolves, who would ultimately see out the match with a 2-1 win over the Golden Eagles. The loss drops Cornerstone to 4-5-1 on the year as they continue with a road conference matchup against University of Northwestern Ohio on Saturday, October 12 for a 4:00 p.m. kickoff.
Game Recap – Lourdes – 2 Cornerstone – 1
First Half:
- In the 2nd minute, the Golden Eagles won a free kick in their offensive half. The ball just barely missed the head of Grant Roloff and landed in the hands of the Gray Wolves' goalkeeper.
- The next opportunity of the match came from Lourdes University, a shot from Federico Reali was saved by Cornerstone's Roberto Gutierrez.
- The 8th minute would bring about the first goal of the game. Good movement of the ball through the midfield by the Gray Wolves sees the Golden Eagles' defense break down. Breno Quiero finishes the ball into the back of the net for Lourdes to make the score 1-0.
- Despite Lourdes holding possession well, the 19th minute would bring the first yellow card of the game to the Gray Wolves' Nawfal Hassani after his foul on Eli Leegwater.
- In the 29th minute of play, Tyler Corstange attempts a bicycle kick on a cross from senior Jeff Herrema, but the attempt falls short, the Gray Wolves clearing the ball out of their own box.
- Another shot from Lourdes University is saved by Roberto Gutierrez to keep the score at 1-0.
- A foul in the box by the Gray Wolves in the 36th minute gives Cornerstone the opportunity to tie the match with a penalty kick. Calvin Curtis steps up for the Golden Eagles to the spot with no problem, slotting it past the goalkeeper in the bottom left corner to tie the game 1-1.
- The yellow cards keep on coming for both teams, as Jake Madak gets his name in the official's book in the 38th minute of play.
- Outshooting the Golden Eagles 9-1 in half one, Lourdes add another goal to the scoreboard on a header by Bruno Duarte to put the Gray Wolves back in the lead 2-1 to end the first half.
Second Half:
- The first shot of the second half goes over the crossbar for the Gray Wolves in the 54th minute.
- The 66th minute of the second half and the action has slowed. Just one shot from the Gray Wolves, none for Cornerstone. One foul by Lourdes and four from Cornerstone breaks the silence of the second half.
- A corner kick in the 70th minute gives the Golden Eagles an opportunity to put the ball in the box, but it is cleared away by the Gray Wolves.
- A header attempt by Ajani Vaughn in the 74th minute is hit over the top of the goal to keep Lourdes ahead 2-1 late in the second half.
- The 76th minute brings a shot from the Gray Wolves that skies over the top of the goal. Just 14 minutes left for Cornerstone to tie up the game.
- A chance for Ajani Vaughn to tie up the match is stopped by the Lourdes defense, Cornerstone not able to get the shot off with just 10 minutes left to play.
- From another Jeff Herrema free kick, Grant Roloff gets his head to the ball, but it goes wide of the goal for a Lourdes goal kick in the 86th minute.
- A shot from Dani Carrillo goes just wide in the 87th minute, Lourdes holding on to their 2-1 lead.
- Two fouls from the frustrated Golden Eagles see the match to its end. The Gray Wolves prevailing over Cornerstone by the small margin of 2-1.
