GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Women's Volleyball kept their five-set streak alive with a 3-2 victory against Michigan-Dearborn. The Golden Eagles went to five sets again in this narrow matchup which made it their fifth game in a row.
Aubrey Johnson led the way with her ninth consecutive double-double (18 kills, 13 digs). The Golden Eagles are in action on the road next with a match against Rochester Christian on Friday, October 11
th at 7 p.m.
Game Recap: Cornerstone – 3 Michigan-Dearborn – 2 (25-14, 25-15, 19-25, 23-25, 15-9)
First Set: Cornerstone – 25 Michigan-Dearborn – 14
- Cornerstone started off the match with an early service error but rallied quickly after they won the next five points and forced the first timeout of the match from Michigan-Dearborn.
- Kill by Aubrey Lenz at the net made the match 10-7 in favor of Cornerstone.
- Back-to-back attack errors from the Wolverines made the match 14-8 early in the set.
- Aubrey Lenz service ace made the set 16-9 and forced Michigan-Dearborn into their second called timeout of the set.
- Kill by Aubrey Johnson gave Cornerstone a 10 (20-10) point advantage late in the first set.
- Cornerstone dominated the first set with a score of 25-14 thanks to some stellar blocks at the net.
Second Set: Cornerstone – 25 Michigan-Dearborn – 15
- Cornerstone started the set off on a three-point run thanks to kills from Jada Thomas and Gabby VerBerkmoes.
- Alli Pickard went on a six-point service run to give the Golden Eagles a 9-1 lead which led to a Michigan-Dearborn timeout.
- Dyllan Hanna tallied two kills later in the set which gave Cornerstone the 17-9 lead.
- Cornerstone continued to dominate the set with attacks from Kylie Barron and Aubrey Johnson which led them to the 25-15 set victory.
Third Set: Cornerstone – 19 Michigan-Dearborn – 25
- Michigan-Dearborn got off to the early lead in the set with a 3-1 lead.
- Aubrey Johnson kill leveled the set at 4-4.
- Kylie Barron had back-to-back kills that gave the edge to Cornerstone early in the set at 7-5.
- Michigan-Dearborn went on an eight-point run to gain the lead at 13-7.
- The Wolverines continued to control the momentum in the set with back and forth kills with the match at 20-12.
- Michigan-Dearborn took the set with a score of 25-19 to stay in the match.
Fourth Set: Cornerstone – 23 Michigan-Dearborn – 25
- Both teams traded two points early in the fourth set at 2-2.
- Block by Kylie Barron started to give the Golden Eagles some energy as they tied the set at 4-4.
- Cornerstone capitalized on a couple attack errors by the Wolverines to take the 7-4 lead early.
- Jada Thomas and Gabby VerBerkmoes continued to be all over the court with clutch kills which gave Cornerstone the 10-7 lead.
- Back-to-back kills from the Wolverines followed by a service ace turned the momentum for Michigan-Dearborn who led 13-12.
- Kill by Marisa Fetterley of Michigan-Dearborn forced Cornerstone into first timeout of the set as they led 17-14.
- Cornerstone produced another huge block from Aubrey Lenz and Gabby VerBerkmoes yet the Golden Eagles still trailed 20-17.
- The Wolverines committed an attack error late in the set as the Golden Eagles only trailed by one point with the score at 23-22.
- Cornerstone could not close the gap late and lost the set 25-23.
Fifth Set: Cornerstone – 15 Michigan-Dearborn – 9
- Both teams traded points early in the set which kept the set at 3-3.
- Huge kill by Kylie Barron gave Cornerstone a narrow 5-4 lead.
- Back and forth points from both squads kept the match level at 7-7.
- Four consecutive kills by Aubrey Johnson closed out the match in the fifth set which gave the Golden Eagles the 3-2 victory.
