Baseball opens conference play with a pair of losses to Siena Heights

ADRIAN, Mich. – The Golden Eagles opened up the conference season with a double header against Siena Heights. The Saints swept the double header against baseball, winning game one 8-3 and game two 8-5. Cornerstone held leads in both games for a short stint before Siena Heights would answer with runs of their own in the bottom half of the innings. Ben Barnes and Drew Goodman led the way for the offense for Cornerstone with four hits apiece. Cornerstone falls to 5-14 on the year and will take on UNOH tomorrow for a double header starting at 1 p.m.
 
Game One Highlights – Siena Heights – 8 Cornerstone - 3
  • Andrew Meny gets the first hit of the game with a two-out double, but the Golden Eagles stranded him at the end of the top of the first.
  • Brody Nelson worked a quick bottom of the first, working around an error while striking out two.
  • Cornerstone and Siena Heights remain scoreless after the third inning thanks to Brody Nelson keeping the Saints bats quiet.
  • After a free pass opens the inning, a couple batters later Siena Heights scores the first run of the game to take a 1-0 lead after the fourth inning.
  • Ben Barnes opened the fifth inning with a double to get the offense going. Andrew Eley would come through with a single into left center to tie the game 1-1 after the top of the fifth.
  • Siena Heights responded right back in the fifth inning, taking advantage of a few hits and walks to make it a 2-1 game as they continue have the bases loaded with one out. Cornerstone walked in one more before giving up a grand slam that gave the Saints a six-run inning to take a 7-1 lead after the fifth.
  • After a hit from Drew Goodman, Matthew Kindley brings him home thanks to a two-run homerun to make it 7-3 in the sixth inning.
  • A two out triple gave Siena Heights one more run in the bottom of the sixth to extend their lead 8-3.
  • The Golden Eagles go down in order in the seventh as they fall 8-3 in game one.
 
Game Two Highlights –  Siena Heights – 8 Cornerstone - 5
  • Mason Leckrone has kept the bats of the Saints quiet as the game remains scoreless after two innings.
  • Andrew Eley would get on base with a one out double and JC Salinas would follow with a double of his own to give Cornerstone a 1-0 advantage in the top of the third.
  • Siena Heights cashed in a one out walk with a triple into right field to tie the game 1-1 after the third inning.
  • Drew Goodman opened the fourth inning with a single up the middle and Ben Barnes would bring home with a double to give Cornerstone a 2-1 lead. Siena Heights would respond right away in the fourth with a triple and a wild pitch to tie it 2-2.
  • Drew Goodman has continued his great day at the plate with this one being a two out, two RBI double to make it a 4-2 Cornerstone lead.
  • Siena Heights would not go away as they scored another run in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single to make it 4-3 after the fifth inning.
  • Ben Barnes opened the sixth with a single up the middle and Steve Hoeksema came in to pinch run. After getting to third, Hoeksema came home on a wild pitch to make it a 5-3 game.
  • With two outs and nobody on, Siena Heights strung together three straight hits to tie the game 5-5 after the sixth inning.
  • Another two-out rally from the Saints sees them grab the lead over the Golden Eagles 6-5 in the eighth inning. One batter later, Siena Heights bring home two more to take an 8-5 lead heading into the final inning.
  • Andrew Meny hit a double for the Golden Eagles in the ninth inning but was not able to score as Cornerstone falls in game two 8-5.
