The Racers get the best of the Golden Eagles in a double header sweep

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Baseball opened play at home for the first time this season with a conference double header against UNOH. The Racers got the best of Cornerstone in the first game winning 9-0 thanks to early scoring and little offense. In game two, UNOH jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but a three-run inning from Cornerstone highlighted by a JC Salinas homer tied the game in the third. Yet, UNOH would answer with a four-run inning, next inning that the Golden Eagles could not recover from. Cornerstone moves to 5-16 (0-4) on the year as they will travel to Lourdes for a double header on Friday, March 22 starting at 1 p.m.
 
Game One Highlights – UNOH – 9 Cornerstone – 0
  • UNOH led off the game with a single and would advance to second on an error. He would later come home on a double to give UNOH a 1-0 lead after the top of the first.
  • The Racers would add on another run in the second inning on a wild pitch to make it 2-0. Another hit later, UNOH now has a 3-0 lead.
  • It was a long inning for the Golden Eagles in the top of the third as UNOH had runners on first and third through the first two batters. They would tack on a run thanks to a fielder's choice and would bring in two more on a single to make it a 6-0 game after the top of the third.
  • Michael Ruiz and Corbin Westerkamp both singled for Cornerstone but were not able to come home as the game remained 6-0 after the fifth.
  • Cornerstone left the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth. UNOH got the inning ending double play to get out of the jam.
  • A two-run homer from the Racers makes it 8-0 in the top of the seventh. They would tack on another run to take a 9-0 lead into the final half inning.
  • Ethan Lajiness singled for Cornerstone, but it was not enough as the Golden Eagles fall in game one 9-0 to UNOH.
 
Game Two Highlights –
  • UNOH had traffic right away in game two thanks to a single and a walk. They would later score the first run of the game on an RBI groundout to take a 1-0 lead. The next batter would come through with a single into right field to make it 2-0 after the top of the first.
  • The Golden Eagles left a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the first as the game heads into the second inning.
  • UNOH tacked on a run in the third thanks to a few errors from the Golden Eagles to make it 3-0.
  • JC Salinas brings in the first two runs of the day for the Golden Eagles with a two-run homerun to make it 3-2 in the third. Drew Goodman would bring home another on a sac fly as the Golden Eagles have tied the game at three at the end of the third inning.
  • The first two batters reach for the Racers in the fourth inning to make it first and third. UNOH would steal a run thanks to a double steal to make it 4-3. A double later, it is now a 5-3 game with runners in scoring position. Another hit brings in two more for UNOH as they put up a crooked number in the fourth to make it 7-3.
  • The Golden Eagles left a man in scoring position in the bottom of the fifth as the game remains in favor of UNOH 7-3.
  • An Andrew Meny double puts runners on second and third for the Golden Eagles in the bottom of the seventh. Cornerstone would plate a run thanks to a Racer error to make it 7-4 but would leave the bases loaded.
  • UNOH would tack on three more run in the top of the ninth to take a 10-4 lead over Cornerstone.
  • Cornerstone strung together a few hits in the bottom of the ninth and brought home one on a Matthew Kindley single, but the Golden Eagles fell in game two 10-5.
