Vega punches out 10 as Baseball splits with Mount Marty

DAVENPORT, Fla. – Back in action in the sunshine state, Baseball faced off against Mount Marty and came away with a split. Cornerstone fell in the first game 4-3 after a three run homerun proved to be the difference maker in the game. Lucas Vega showed his ace stuff in game two, striking out 10 batters as Cornerstone won 5-2. The Golden Eagles move to 3-6 on the season as they will be back in action with games against Grand View and Calumet on Monday starting at 9 a.m.
 
Game One Highlights – Mount Marty – 4 Cornerstone - 3
  • Mount Marty strikes first in the bottom of the first with a one out RBI double, taking advantage of a leadoff walk to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
  • After Mount Marty walked the first two batters, Cornerstone took advantage of an error to tie the game 1-1 in the top of the second.
  • After back-to-back singles to lead off the inning, Brody Nelson sets the next three batters down in order with a pair of strikeouts to keep the game tied 1-1 after the second.
  • Andrew Eley and JC Salinas led the inning off with back-to-back singles and would both come home on an RBI double from Andrew Meny to take a 3-1 lead in the top of the third.
  • After getting the first two guys out, Mount Marty had three straight hits with the final one being a homerun, just sneaking over the left field fence to take a 4-3 lead after the third inning.
  • Brody Nelson has settled in nicely, working back-to-back scoreless innings as Mount Marty continues to lead 4-3 after the fifth inning.
  • Mounty Marty shuts the Golden Eagle bats down as they go on to win 4-3.
 
Game Two Highlights – Cornerstone - 5 Mount Marty - 2
  • Lucas Vega opened the second game on the mound and worked a clean inning with a pair of strikeouts to get the bats up to the plate.
  • Andrew Meny brings home the first run of the game with a double off the right field wall to give Cornerstone a 1-0 lead after the first inning.
  • JC Salinas gets the two out triple that scores two to extend Cornerstones lead 3-0 in the bottom of the second.
  • Mount Marty gets on the board for the first time in this game, taking advantage of a Cornerstone error with an RBI double, making it 3-1. Lucas Vega gets out of the jam with strikeout looking to head into the bottom half of the third.
  • Matthew Kindley opened the bottom of the fourth with a double that hopped over the center field fence. Corbin Westerkamp would bring home on a sac fly to make it a 4-1 game after the fourth.
  • Lucas Vega strikes out the side in the top of the fifth as the Golden Eagles continue to lead 4-1.
  • It continues to be the Lucas Vega show as he strands the runner on second with a strikeout to keep it a 4-1 game after the top of the sixth.
  • Corbin Westerkamp adds an insurance run with his first homerun of the season to make it 5-1 in the bottom of the sixth.
  • Mount Marty scores one in the top of the seventh but Ben Cunningham shuts the door on the game as the Golden Eagles win 5-2.
