GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Baseball welcomed the number two seed in the conference, the Concordia Cardinals and came away with a split.
Lucas Vega continued his dominant season on the mount, shutting down Concordia's offense in seven innings of one run ball while striking out eight. In game two, Concordia's bats woke up as they went on to beat Cornerstone 13-7. The Golden Eagles are now 15-22 (10-10) on the year as they take on Aquinas on Wednesday, April 17 for a double header starting at 3 p.m.
Game One Highlights – Cornerstone – 2 Concordia – 1
- Concordia had a runner at third with one out after a triple, but Lucas Vega would strand the runner there with a strikeout and a groundout to keep to the game scoreless after the top of the first.
- Cornerstone threatened in the bottom of the second but was not able to score after some nice defensive plays by Concordia.
- Ben Barnes led off the bottom of the fourth with a solo homerun to give Cornerstone a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, Daniel Freeman would bring home another with a single into right field to make it 2-0 after the fourth.
- Lucas Vega struck out two more hitters in the top of the fifth to keep Cornerstone in the lead 2-0.
- Concordia got on the board in the top of the sixth inning on a sac fly to make it 2-1.
- A one out double and a stolen base for Concordia had a man on third with one out in the top of the seventh. A Lucas Vega strike out and a groundout gave Cornerstone a big game one victory 2-1.
Game Two Highlights – Concordia – 13 Cornerstone – 7
- Concordia struck first in game two with a single up the middle to score two to take a 2-0 lead. Another single later in the inning scored two more to make it 4-0 after the top of the first.
- Matthew Kindley led off the second inning with a solo homerun to make it 4-1.
- A Gannon Fox double and an Andrew Eley single gave Cornerstone first and third with one out. Cornerstone would score one on a wild pitch to make it 4-2 in the fourth inning.
- Concordia led off the fifth inning with a solo homerun to make it 5-2. Later in the inning, Concordia would tack on two more on a single into left field to make it 7-2.
- Andrew Meny came through with a two out solo homerun to cut into Concordia's lead 7-3.
- Concordia would answer with a homerun of their own in the sixth inning to extend their lead 8-3.
- Cornerstone had second and third with one out in the bottom of the sixth. Daniel Freeman came through with a single in right center, bringing in two to make it 8-5. The Golden Eagles would add one more on a sac fly. 8-6 headed into the seventh inning.
- Ben Barnes would bring home Steve Hoeksema on a fielder's choice to make it 8-7.
- A big inning by Concordia as they put up a crooked number to extend their lead 13-7.
- Concordia splits the double header with a game two 13-7 victory
