GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles welcomed Aquinas back on the playing surface of DeWitt Field for a conference double header. Game one went to Aquinas after they used a four-run bottom of the sixth to sneak past Cornerstone 5-1. Cornerstone would answer in game two thanks to a big game at the plate from
Gannon Fox and
Matthew Kindley to take it 5-3 to earn the split. Baseball is now 16-23 (11-11) on the year as they will welcome Rochester Christian on April 19 for a double header starting at 1 p.m.
Game One Highlights – Aquinas – 5 Cornerstone - 1
- Aquinas scored first in game one, using a two out single into centerfield to take a 1-0 lead after the first inning.
- Cam VanPutten has settled in nicely since the first inning as the game remains 1-0, Aquinas leading.
- Back-to-back singles from Andrew Meny and Matthew Kindley gave the Golden Eagles runners on second and third with one out. A stolen base and an error from the Saints gave Cornerstone their first run of the game, tying it 1-1 after the top of the fourth.
- The game remains tied after the fifth inning as Cam VanPutten has gone five strong innings.
- Aquinas would clear the bases with a double down the right field line to take a 3-1 lead over the Golden Eagles. The next batter would hit a double to make it 4-1 and then they would follow that with a single to take a 5-1 lead after the bottom of the sixth.
- Andrew Eley doubles in the top of the seventh but the Golden Eagles fall in game one, 5-1.
Game Two Highlights – Cornerstone – 5 Aquinas - 3
- A one out walk and a single by the Golden Eagles set up Gannon Fox as he would bring both runners home on a double into left center to give Cornerstone a 2-0 lead in the second inning.
- Drew Goodman is through three strong innings of pitching as the Golden Eagles continue to lead 2-0.
- Matthew Kindley let the power show once again as he blasted a solo homerun in fifth inning to extend Cornerstone's lead 3-0.
- Drew Goodman and Alex Hayward have kept the bats of the Saints quiet as Cornerstone leads 3-0 after the sixth inning.
- Aquinas got on the board in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI groundout to make it 3-1.
- With two outs, Andrew Eley would bring home a run on a double to make it 4-1 in the top of the eighth. The two out rally continued for Cornerstone as Gannon Fox would drive home Eley with a single to extend their lead 5-1.
- Christian Burgess worked a clean bottom of the eighth to send the game into the final inning.
- Aquinas loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth to bring the tying run to the plate. They would plate two with two outs with a single into left field to make it 5-3 but Lucas Vega would limit the damage as Cornerstone would win game two, 5-3.
