Baseball starts a new win streak, sweeps the double header vs. Cleary

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Cornerstone faced off against Cleary for a double header rematch on DeWitt Field as Lucas Vega shined once again on the mound to help Cornerstone to a game one 10-3 victory. In game two, the slugging of Ben Barnes and Michael Ruiz helped the Golden Eagles to a sweep with a 5-3 victory. Cornerstone improves to 14-19 (9-7) on the year as they will take on Aquinas on Tuesday, April 9 for a double header starting at 3 p.m.
 
Game One Highlights – Cornerstone – 10 Cleary - 3
  • Cleary scored first in game one with a two out RBI double down the left field line to take a 1-0 lead over the Golden Eagles.
  • After a walk and a double to lead off the bottom of the first for the Golden Eagles, Andrew Meny tied the game with a sac fly. Mathew Kindley would follow that with a double to give Cornerstone a 2-1 lead.
  • Cleary walked the bases loaded in the bottom of the second with no outs as JC Salinas would clear the bases with a triple down the right field line to make it a 5-1 Cornerstone lead. Drew Goodman would follow with a sac fly to make it 6-1 after the second.
  • Lucas Vega has settled in nicely since the first inning setting down the Cleary hitters in order in the third.
  • Cleary threatened in the top of the fifth, but Lucas Vega would leave the bases loaded to maintain Cornerstones 6-1 lead.
  • Michael Ruiz would come through with an insurance run with a ground rule double to make it 7-1 in the fifth. JC Salinas would follow with a double of his own to make it 8-1.
  • After a sun aided double opened the inning for Cleary, they would eventually bring that runner home on a single into right field to make it 8-2.
  • Matthew Kindley hit his second double of the day, this drove in Steve Hoeksema to make it 9-2. Andrew Eley would hit it through the left side to drive in Kindley to now make it 10-2 in the sixth.
  • Cleary opens the seventh inning with a long homerun to center field to make it 10-3 but Mason Leckrone strikes out three to give Cornerstone the game one victory.
 
Game Two Highlights – Cornerstone – 5 Cleary - 3
  • Cleary works around a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the second to keep the game scoreless heading into the third inning.
  • The Cougars get on the board first in the top of the third on a sac fly to take a 1-0 lead over Cornerstone.
  • Matthew Kindley led off the bottom of the fourth with a triple and would come home on an RBI single from Ben Barnes to tie the game 1-1. Michael Ruiz would later give Cornerstone a 2-1 lead on an opposite field homerun.
  • Three straight hits highlighted by a Ben Barnes three run homerun in the bottom of the sixth extended Cornerstones lead 5-1.
  • After a leadoff walk for Cleary, the next batter would hit a long homerun over the left field fence to make it a 5-3 game in the seventh inning.
  • Cam VanPutten strands the runner on second with a strikeout to keep Cornerstones 5-3 lead intact after the top of the eighth.
  • The Golden Eagles shut down the Cougars in the top of the ninth, winning 5-3 to complete the sweep.
