GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Baseball was back in action at DeWitt Field taking on Aquinas for a makeup double header. The Saints scored early and often in game one, taking it 12-4 over the Golden Eagles. In game two, Aquinas used a seven run fifth inning to take the lead and never looked back on their way to an 13-8 victory. Cornerstone had all the offense they needed as they tallied 26 hits and eight doubles but fell to 14-21 (9-9) after the double header. Cornerstone will head to Lawrence Tech on Friday, April 12 for a double header starting at 1 p.m.
Game One Highlights – Aquinas – 12 Cornerstone - 4
- Brody Nelson worked a quick 1-2-3 inning with a couple strikeouts to get the game underway.
- An inning where the Golden Eagles were caught stealing home and called out on batter's interference, Aquinas kept them off the board in a wild bottom of the first.
- The Saints would respond right away in the top of the second with an RBI double to take a 1-0 lead.
- Three straight singles by Aquinas leaves the bases loaded with one out in the top of the third. Their fourth straight single scores two to extend their lead 3-0. They would add more on a successful double steal, run down, to make it 4-0.
- The Saints continued to have good at bats in the fourth as their second double of the inning makes it 5-0. Aquinas would score one more on a walk to make it 6-0, but a nice throw from right field from Matthew Kindley gets a would-be runner out at home.
- The Golden Eagles score one in the bottom of the fourth thanks to an Andrew Eley single into left field to make it 6-1.
- Just like that, Aquinas would tack on a run in the top of the fifth thanks to an RBI single. That made it 7-1.
- Back-to-back two out doubles from Ben Barnes and Lucas Vegas for the Golden Eagles made it a 7-2 game in the bottom of the sixth.
- The Saints would tack on a few more in the top of the seventh to extend their lead 12-2.
- Gannon Fox opened the bottom of the seventh with a leadoff double and would later score on an Ethan Lajiness RBI single to make it 12-3. Drew Goodman would add one more on a sac fly but the Golden Eagles would fall in game one, 12-4.
Game Two Highlights – Aquinas – 13 Cornerstone - 8
- Rafael Blom worked around a second and third one out jam in the top of the second, getting the run out at home to keep the game scoreless.
- Lucas Vega came through with the first two runs of the game thanks to a double into left center to give Cornerstone a 2-0 lead. Later in the inning, Andrew Eley would bring Vega home to make it 3-0 after the second inning.
- Pitching duo of Rafael Blom and Christian Burgess is through four scoreless innings as the Golden Eagles lead 3-0.
- Andrew Meny opened the bottom of the fourth with a double down the left field line. Steve Hoeksema would later score on an error by the Saints to make it 4-0.
- Aquinas got on the board in the fifth inning with a solo homerun, cutting into Cornerstones lead 4-1. Three straight free bases from CU sees Aquinas have the bases loaded with nobody out. Another walk and a double for Aquinas tied the game 4-4 still with nobody out. The Saints hit a triple to end the inning as they now lead 7-4 over the Golden Eagles.
- A double and sac fly for Aquinas has them now leading 9-4 after the top of the sixth.
- The Saints continue to score runs on the Golden Eagles as it is now 11-4 after the seventh inning.
- The Golden Eagles tried to make a late comeback in the ninth but fell short losing in game two 13-8.
