UPLAND, Ind. – Women's Volleyball competed in a one-day tournament down in Indiana hosted by Taylor University. Cornerstone opened the day with Taylor and battled back-and-forth in a five-set match that eventually saw them drop their first match of the year 3-2.. The Golden Eagles would try and rebound later against #20 Mount Vernon Nazarene but would fall in straight sets as they would go 0-2 on the day. Women's Volleyball is now 4-2 on the year as they will remain on the road as they open conference play on Wednesday, September 4 against Michigan-Dearborn.
Game One Recap – Taylor – 3 Cornerstone – 2 (25-17, 20-25, 18-25, 25-15, 11-15)
First Set: Cornerstone – 25 Taylor - 17
- The first set opened in a back-and-forth affair as the match is tied 4-4 after a kill from Aubrey Johnson.
- The Golden Eagles found their first two-point lead after a kill from Emmalee Murphy.
- A 6-1 run by the Golden Eagles saw their lead grow to 14-11 after a kill from Emmalee Murphy and Kylie Barron.
- The run continued for the Golden Eagles as a service ace from Aubrey Lenz made it 19-12 Cornerstone.
- The aces continued for the Golden Eagles as Aubrey Johnson added one to make it 21-13.
- Cornerstone takes the first set 25-17 thanks to errors from the Trojans.
Second Set: Taylor – 25 Cornerstone – 20
- Just like the first set, Cornerstone and Taylor traded points as a kill from Emmalee Murphy makes it a 4-3 Golden Eagle advantage.
- Taylor found some momentum that resulted in a 5-1 run to take an 8-5 lead over Cornerstone as they took advantage of some Golden Eagle mistakes.
- Cornerstone would respond swiftly with a 4-1 run to tie the set at nine after a kill from Jada Thomas and Gabby VerBerkmoes.
- An Emma Whitley ace ties the second set at 12.
- Cornerstone is forced to use a timeout as Taylor has started to pull away as they lead 17-14 after a block from the Trojans.
- A service error makes it a 20-18 Taylor advantage late in the second set.
- Taylor would take the second set 25-20.
Third Set: Taylor – 25 Cornerstone – 18
- It was not the start the Golden Eagles wanted in the third set as they found themselves down 7-1 right away.
- Cornerstone had to use their first timeout of the set as Taylor continued to pull away as it is now 12-4.
- Out of the timeout, Cornerstone used a 3-0 run that forced Taylor into a timeout thanks to back-to-back kills from Kylie Barron.
- The run continued for the Golden Eagles as they used a 4-0 run to make it a 13-11 Taylor advantage as the run was highlighted by two kills from Aubrey Johnson and a service ace from Payton Hutchinson.
- Taylor continued to hold onto their lead as a kill from Reagan Salzbrenner made it 18-13.
- Kylie Barron added a kill then a block with Aubrey Lenz to make it 22-18 as they try and stay close late in the third set.
- Taylor would close out the third set on a 3-0 run to take the third set 25-18 and set advantage 2-1.
Fourth Set: Cornerstone – 25 Taylor – 16
- It was all Cornerstone to start the fourth set as blocks from Gabby VerBerkmoes, Jada Thomas, and Emmalee Murphy made it a 5-2 advantage.
- A 5-1 run by Cornerstone forced Taylor into a timeout as they now lead 10-3 after a solo block from Kylie Barron.
- Aubrey Johnson adds a kill in the set to make it 14-6 Cornerstone.
- Back-to-back kills from Emmalee Murphy made Taylor use their final timeout as the Golden Eagles lead 19-12.
- Aubrey Johnson adds two more kills in the set as the Golden Eagles are three points away from a victory to force a fifth set.
- Three straight errors from Taylor gave Cornerstone the 25-16 win.
Fifth Set: Taylor – 15 Cornerstone – 11
- In the final set of the match, Cornerstone and Taylor battled back-and-forth as the set is tied 3-3 after a kill from Gabby VerBerkmoes.
- Cornerstone rallied off a 4-0 run to force Taylor into a timeout as they took a 7-4 lead before the halfway switch. Emma Whitley highlighted the run with a service ace.
- Cornerstone continued to hold onto their lead as a kill from Emmalee Murphy made it 9-7.
- Three straight points by Taylor saw them take an 10-9 advantage over Cornerstone.
- Taylor helped the Golden Eagles with two straight errors to give them an 11-10 advantage.
- Some miscommunication and errors from the Golden Eagles gave Taylor five straight points to take the fifth and final set 15-11.
Game Two Recap – #20 Mount Vernon – 3 Cornerstone – 0 (18-25, 18-25, 20-25)
First Set: Mount Vernon – 25 Cornerstone - 18
- Mount Vernon jumped out to a 4-1 lead thanks to back-to-back kills from Faith Maloney.
- The Cougars continued to extend their lead early in the first set as two straight errors from the Golden Eagles made it 11-6.
- A 3-1 run by Cornerstone makes it 13-10 after a kill from Aubrey Johnson.
- Cornerstone and Mount Vernon continued to trade points as the Cougars remain in the lead 17-14.
- Four straight points from Mount Vernon makes it 21-14 late in the first set.
- Another 3-0 run from the Cougars makes it 24-17 before a kill from Kylie Barron.
- Mount Vernon takes the first set 25-18.
Second Set: Mount Vernon – 25 Cornerstone – 18
- A kill from Kylie Barron and a service ace from Payton Hutchinson gave Cornerstone the early 4-3 lead to start the second set.
- A 5-2 run by the Golden Eagles makes it 10-7 Cornerstone after a kill from Emmalee Murphy.
- Mount Vernon used a nice run to tie the match at 11 before the Golden Eagles took advantage of two errors to make it 13-11.
- A big momentum changer run by the Cougars sees them take a 18-14 lead over Cornerstone thanks to three service aces and multiple kills.
- The run continued for Mount Vernon as they closed out the second set on a 7-1 run to take set two 25-18.
Third Set: Mount Vernon – 25 Cornerstone – 20
- Payton Hutchinson added another service ace in the match to give Cornerstone an early 4-3 lead.
- A solo block from Dyllan Hanna pulls Cornerstone within one 8-7 in the third set.
- Mount Vernon used a long 6-0 run to take a 14-7 lead thanks to five kills and a service ace.
- Kylie Barron and Dyllan Hanna blocks the attack from the Cougar attacker to make it a 18-13 Mount Vernon advantage late in the third set.
- Aubrey Johnson adds a kill and Mount Vernon has a bad set to make it 20-16.
- The Cougars finish the third set strong as they win set 25-20 and match 3-0.
