Men's Soccer's offense stalls as they fall 2-0 to Calvin

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Men's Soccer returned to action with their final nonconference matchup of the season against Calvin. In the battle for the Beltline, the Golden Eagles couldn't get anything going on the offensive end as they fell 2-0 against the Knights. The loss moves Cornerstone to 2-2-1 on the year as they return home against #17 Indiana Tech on Saturday, September 21 for a 4:30 p.m. kickoff.

First Half:
  • The first opportunity of the match belonged to Calvin as the shot was saved by the Cornerstone keeper Roberto Gutierrez in the fourth minute.
  • From the 12th minute to the 18th minute, Calvin continued to have shot attempts but came up empty as they have dominated the ball to start the match.
  • Cornerstone had their first opportunity in the 22nd minute with a corner kick but was unable to capitalize on it.
  • Roberto Gutierrez recorded three straight saves for the Golden Eagles in the 27th through 30th minute of the match.
  • Calvin found the back of the net in the 35th minute to take a 1-0 lead over Cornerstone.
  • The Knights head into the break with a 1-0 advantage over Cornerstone. They have out-shot the Golden Eagles 11-1.
 
Second Half:
  • Cornerstone and Calvin traded shots in the 47th and 48th minute but both were unable to find the back of the net.
  • Saves continued to pile up for Roberto Gutierrez as he recorded three more in the 56th minute to keep it a 1-0 match.
  • Calvin continued to dominate the possession of the ball as they limited the attempts for the Golden Eagles through 65 minutes.
  • The Knights score for the second time of the match in 77th minute to take a 2-0 lead.
  • Calvin closes the door on the Golden Eagles as they win it 2-0.
