Grand Rapids, Mich. – Men's Soccer was back into action after a long 16-day break facing the University of Saint Francis in their second home match of the season. It was a physical match that produced seven yellow cards between both sides.
Tyler Corstange scored his first goal of the season to level the game at 1-1 but it did not prove to be enough as the game finished 2-1 in favor of Saint Francis. Cornerstone moves to 1-1 on the season as they head on the road to Chicago this weekend for a Saturday September 7
th match against Saint Xavier kicking off at 2:30 p.m.
Game Recap: Cornerstone – 1 Saint Francis - 2
First Half:
- The first few minutes of the match were chippy and provided an early yellow card to Anthony Derka of Saint Francis.
- Tyler Corstange early effort nearly gave Cornerstone the lead in the seventh minute of the match but missed just left.
- Saint Francis found the back of net in their first true attempt of the first half with a goal from Jesus Flores.
- Tyler Corstange responded quickly in the 17th minute with a top corner finish to bring the match level at 1-1.
- Calvin Curtis found the crossbar off the corner kick in the 26th minute which almost gave Cornerstone the lead.
- The first half continued in physical nature with four total yellow cards given but the score remained at 1-1.
Second Half:
- The first five minutes of the second half were controlled well by the Golden Eagles with heavy pressure in the Saints defensive third.
- The story of the game continued with both teams reaching three yellow cards a piece just after the 60th minute mark.
- Pablo Rubio Guerra of Saint Francis and Tyler Corstange both see one on one chances that come up empty to keep the match level at 1-1 in the 65th minute.
- Roberto Gutierrez made a huge save in the 75th minute for the Golden Eagles and he followed it up just three minutes later with free kick save that tipped the ball over the crossbar.
- The Saints took the late lead with a goal from Ander Santamarta to give them a 2-1 lead in the 87th minute.
- The match finished 2-1 in favor of the Saints.
