GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Women's Volleyball returned home to host the AQ/CU Invitational as they welcomed St. Francis on day one, falling in a heartbreaking five set match 3-2.
Aubrey Lenz became the fourth setter in program history to record 4,000 career assists as she recorded a match high 53 on the night. The Golden Eagles move to 5-3 on the year as they are right back in action tomorrow at 1 and 3 p.m. against Cumberlands and IUSB.
Game Recap – St. Francis – 3 Cornerstone – 2 (21-25, 25-19, 24-26, 25-20, 12-15)
First Set: St. Francis – 25 Cornerstone 21
- St. Francis jumped out to a 3-0 lead thanks to back-to-back service aces from Desiree Anderson.
- The Golden Eagles answered with a 5-2 run to tie the first set 5-5 after a kill from Aubrey Johnson.
- It continued to go Cornerstones way to open the set as back-to-back service aces from Olivia Endris made it 8-5.
- The early part of the set continued to play back-and-forth as St. Francis scored three straight points to take a 13-11 advantage.
- A kill and another service ace from the Saints forced Cornerstone to use their first timeout as St. Francis leads 16-14.
- Another service ace from Olivia Endris and a kill from Aubrey Johnson saw the Golden Eagles chip away at the Saints lead 19-17.
- St. Francis finished the first set on a high note to take the set 25-21
Second Set: Cornerstone – 25 St. Francis - 19
- The set opened with big kills from both sides as one from Kylie Barron made it 2-2.
- A loud kill from Aubrey Johnson was followed with a block from Gabby VerBerkmoes and Emmalee Murphy to give Cornerstone the 7-5 advantage.
- The run continued for the Golden Eagles that forced St. Francis into a timeout as Cornerstone leads 11-6 after back-to-back Jada Thomas kills.
- It continued to be all Cornerstone in the second set as four straight points make it a 17-9 after an Olivia Endris service ace.
- Kylie Barron record two straight kills for the Golden Eagles to make it 20-12 late in the second set.
- Jada Thomas closes the second set with a kill to give Cornerstone the 25-19 win
Third Set: St. Francis – 26 Cornerstone - 24
- Like the first set, St. Francis jumped out to a 3-0 lead thanks to a couple kills and a service ace.
- A kill from Emmalee Murphy and Kylie Barron tied the set 5-5.
- Another 7-2 run by Cornerstone sees them take a 12-7 lead after kills from Emmalee Murphy and Jada Thomas as Aubrey Lenz added back-to-back service aces.
- Gabby VerBerkmoes puts an end to the short St. Francis rally with a loud kill to make it 14-10.
- Points continued to be traded in the third set but a kill from Aubrey Johnson made it a 19-15 Cornerstone lead.
- A small run by the Saints forced Cornerstone to use of their timeouts as they continue to hold onto the lead 21-19 late in the third set.
- St. Francis forced extra points as their kill ties the match 24-24.
- The Cougars take the third set 26-24 to complete the big comeback.
Fourth Set: Cornerstone – 25 St. Francis - 20
- For the third time in four sets, St. Francis jumped out to a 3-0 lead after another service ace.
- Yet another service ace by the Saints makes it a 7-2 St. Francis advantage.
- A kill from Kylie Barron and a block from Aubrey Lenz and Gabby VerBerkmoes cuts into St. Francis's lead 9-6.
- Dyllan Hanna gave the Golden Eagles a spark with back-to-back kills to make it 10-9.
- A kill from Jada Thomas sparked back-to-back blocks from Kylie Barron, Aubrey Lenz, and Emmalee Murphy to tie the set 14-14.
- Kylie Barron continued to put kill after kill away as two more gave Cornerstone a 18-17 lead late in the fourth set.
- After a long rally back and forth, the Golden Eagles prevail with a Dyllan Hanna kill to make it 21-18.
- The Golden Eagles complete the comeback of their own to force a fifth set with a fourth set 25-20 victory after Gabby VerBerkmoes put the final kill down.
Fifth Set: St. Francis – 15 Cornerstone - 12
- Cornerstone jumped out to a quick 3-1 lead to open the fifth set after a service ace from Olivia Endris.
- A sneaky kill from Emma Whitley makes it a 5-2 Cornerstone advantage.
- St. Francis has snuck back into the game as at the hallway switch the Golden Eagles continue to lead 8-7.
- A kill from Jada Thomas continued to keep the Golden Eagles ahead 10-8.
- Back-to-back kills from Desiree Anderson of St. Francis forced Cornerstone into a timeout as the match is tied 10-10.
- A service ace and attack error by the Golden Eagles sees them down 12-10 as they use their final timeout.
- Gabby VerBerkmoes keeps the Golden Eagles in the fifth set to make it 14-12 as St. Francis continued to lead.
- St. Francis puts the final touch on their fifth set comeback to take it 15-13 and the match 3-2.
