GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Women's Volleyball returned to action with matches against Cumberland and IUSB to finish out the AQ/CU Invitational. Cornerstone would respond with a 3-0 sweep of both Cumberland and IUSB on their way to a 2-0 day. Both those wins move CU to 7-3 on the year as they will hit the road once more for a primetime conference matchup against Indiana Tech on Friday, September 13 starting at 7 p.m.
Game One Recap – Cornerstone – 3 Cumberland 0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-16)
First Set: Cornerstone – 25 Cumberland - 20
- The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 lead thanks to a kill from Gabby VerBerkmoes.
- Cumberland would respond with a 4-1 run to knot the set at fours.
- Aubrey Johnson added a kill then a service ace to give the Golden Eagles a 10-8 lead.
- Cornerstone forced Cumberland to use their first timeout of the set thanks to back-to-back kills from Kylie Barron and Gabby VerBerkmoes that made it 13-9.
- The Phoenix would respond with a 6-2 run to tie the match once more, but this time at 15.
- After a 3-0 Golden Eagle run to make it 18-15, Cumberland would score three straight to force Cornerstone into a timeout as it remains tied late in the first set.
- Kylie Barron picked up right where she left off with two more kills to make it a 21-19 Golden Eagle advantage.
- Cornerstone closed out the first set on a 4-1 run to win 25-20 thanks to more kills from Kylie Barron and Aubrey Lenz.
Second Set: Cornerstone – 25 Cumberland - 23
- Cornerstone and Cumberlands battled to a 3-3 start to the second set after a couple kills from Emmalee Murphy.
- A long rally resulted in a Golden Eagle point thanks to a block from Kylie Barron and Aubrey Johnson to make it 6-5
- An Emmalee Murphy kill puts the Golden Eagles ahead of the Phoenix 10-9 in set two.
- A 4-0 run by the Golden Eagles forced Cumberland into a timeout as they have grown their lead 15-11 after kills from Emmalee Murphy, Aubrey Johnson, and Gabby VerBerkmoes.
- Right out of the timeout, Cumberland would go on a 4-0 run to force Cornerstone into a timeout of their own as the set is tied at 15.
- Back-to-back errors by the Phoenix gave Cornerstone a 19-17 lead late in the second set.
- Cumberland called their final timeout of the set after Kylie Barron recorded a solo block and Emmalee Murphy recorded a kill to extend the Golden Eagle lead 21-18.
- A 3-1 run by Cumberland forced Cornerstone to use their final timeout as the set as CU continued to lead 22-21.
- Aubrey Johnson put the final kill of the second set down to give the Golden Eagles a 25-23 set two victory.
Third Set: Cornerstone – 25 Cumberland - 16
- Cumberland jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead over Cornerstone thanks to a couple kills.
- The Phoenix continued to maintain their lead as Cornerstone called a timeout as they find themselves down 8-4.
- The Golden Eagles prevail after another long rally to tie the set at nine thanks to a Kylie Barron kill.
- Cumberland was forced to use one of their timeouts as four straight kills by the Golden Eagles sees them have a 13-10 lead after a slow start.
- Emmalee Murphy added another kill for the Golden Eagles in the third set as they continued to lead 17-13.
- Back-to-back blocks from Gabby VerBerkmoes and Emmalee Murphy forced Cumberland to use their final timeout as they lead late 19-13.
- The Golden Eagles continued to pull away as another solo block from Gabby VerBerkmoes makes it 22-14.
- Cornerstone returned to form with a set three 25-16 victory after an Aubrey Johnson kill.
Game Two Recap – Cornerstone - 3 IUSB - 0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-21)
First Set: Cornerstone – 25 IUSB - 20
- Cornerstone and IUSB traded 2-0 runs as a kill from Kylie Barron made it 2-2.
- Emmalee Murphy sends one down to make it 7-5 as Aubrey Lenz followed that with a service ace.
- A 5-0 run by the Titans forced Cornerstone to use their first timeout of the set as they took a 10-9 lead.
- The errors continued for the Golden Eagles as the Titans have extended their lead 14-10.
- Cornerstone started to chip away at the IUSB lead as a kill from Kylie Barron made it 17-16.
- IUSB was forced to call a timeout as the Golden Eagles stormed back to take a 19-17 lead after back-to-back service aces from Emma Whitley.
- The Golden Eagles finished the first set strong as they win 25-20 thanks to a kill from Aubrey Johnson.
Second Set: Cornerstone – 25 IUSB - 15
- IUSB jumped out to a 3-1 lead to open the second set.
- Payton Hutchinson extended the Golden Eagle lead thanks to a service ace to make it 6-4.
- A service ace by the Titans knots the set at nines
- IUSB is forced to call a timeout as a kill from Aubrey Johnson made it a 14-10 Golden Eagle lead.
- The run continued for Cornerstone as an ace from Ava Ford made it 17-10.
- Aubrey Johnson got in on the action with two service aces of her own to make it 20-11.
- Dyllan Hanna would record a kill for Cornerstone to make it 23-13.
- Lydia Uganski would record a kill and a block to help Cornerstone to a 25-15 set two victory.
Third Set: Cornerstone – 25 IUSB - 21
- Aubrey Johnson gave Cornerstone a 3-2 lead after a back row kill.
- IUSB responded with a quick run to take a 7-6 lead.
- The Golden Eagles would respond with a 5-1 run that forced IUSB into a timeout after back-to-back Jada Thomas kills.
- Aubrey Johnson sends a ball down for a loud kill to retake the lead 12-11.
- Gabby VerBerkmoes records back-to-back kills for the Golden Eagles to make it 17-14 late in the third set.
- The Golden Eagles were forced to call a timeout as the Titans have gone on a 3-0 run to make it a 20-19 match late in the set.
- Macy Ward would end the run with a kill of her own to make it 21-19.
- Aubrey Lenz ends the match with a kill to give Cornerstone the 25-21 set three victory.
