Men’s Basketball was unable to find a rhythm late as Lourdes held on for a 79-69 victory

Sylvania, Ohio – Men's Basketball was back in action in the new year on the road against Lourdes. The Gray Wolves knocked down clutch buckets down the stretch to take down the Golden Eagles 79-69. Cornerstone simply could not find a way to put together stops and buckets down the stretch to find the victory. Luke Rowlinson led the way in scoring for the away squad with 17 points followed by Mason Brooks 12 points. The Golden Eagles fall to 9-6 (5-2) on the year after the defeat but look to gear up for their next matchup quickly. Cornerstone will stay on the road as they take on Lawrence Tech Wednesday, January 8 for a 7:30 p.m. tip. 

Game Highlights – #RV Cornerstone – 69 Lourdes – 79

First Half
  • The first bucket of the game went to the Golden Eagles thanks to a three pointer from Luke Rowlinson off a cross-court pass from Toby Woolcock
  • Mason Brooks added another early bucket for Cornerstone with a smooth step back jumper to open a 5-0 lead after two minutes. 
  • Toby Woolcock put a strong drive together weaving through the defense for two which extended the lead for Cornerstone to 7-3. 
  • Lourdes answered right back with strong shooting from behind the arc with back-to-back three pointers to take a 9-7 lead. 
  • Connor Dykema tied the game back up off a bucket at the rim with 15 minutes left to play. 
  • Both teams exchanged buckets which made the game 13-13 with Luke Rowlinson and Jack Joldersma scoring in the span. 
  • Jack Joldersma tied the game once again with a smooth hook shot off the glass for his second bucket of the first half. 
  • Lourdes opened a 5-point run thanks to some strong defensive possessions to take a 20-15 lead. 
  • Levi Schultz found a bucket for the Golden Eagles to cut into the Gray Wolves narrow lead at the halfway mark of the first half. 
  • The sharpshooter Kayden Bird knocked down his first shot of the day from behind the arc to bring Cornerstone within two points of the Gray Wolves. 
  • Lourdes continued their hot shooting from behind the arc as they knocked down another three pointer and took a 27-22 lead with seven minutes left to play. 
  • Connor Dykema and Luke Rowlinson found layups on their next two shots to cut into the Lourdes lead as they only trailed by three points. 
  • Blake Stewart got his first bucket of the game in a quick back and forth span between both teams, yet Cornerstone still trailed 32-30 with three minutes left in the half. 
  • Lourdes went on another 5-point run to extend their lead to 37-30 with two minutes left on the clock. 
  • Jack Joldersma converted a jumper to close out the scoring for the Golden Eagles as they trailed 38-32 at the halftime buzzer. 
Second Half
  • The second half started with back-and-forth scoring from both teams as Toby Woolcock and Mason Brooks added buckets for the Golden Eagles, but the Gray Wolves continued to lead by six points. 
  • Mason Brooks knocked down a three pointer which made the game 44-40 with 16 minutes left to play. 
  • The Gray Wolves found a 6-point run early in the second half and extended their lead to double digits with 15 minutes on the clock. 
  • Blake Stewart continued to fight for the Golden Eagles as he tallied his sixth point and cut the Lourdes lead to 52-44. 
  • Jack Joldersma knocked down a step back three pointer for the Golden Eagles but Lourdes continued to respond as they led 58-48 with 12 minutes left to play. 
  • Blake Stewart found another tough bucket at the rim and his chippy defense earned a technical foul for himself and the offensive player in the 11th minute of the game. 
  • Luke Rowlinson drained a deep three pointer to cut the Lourdes lead to five points with nine minutes left to play. 
  • Cornerstone and Lourdes both exchanged four point runs late in the second half, but the Gray Wolves managed to hold their 69-61 lead with five minutes left to play.
  • Lourdes continued to find their shots fall as they sunk a dagger three to go up 11 points with three minutes left to play. 
  • Luke Rowlinson knocked down a late three pointer in the contest, but it proved to be too far out of reach for the Golden Eagles as they fell 79-69 to Lourdes.

51.9% – Cornerstone shot 51.9% from the field compared to Lourdes 49.2%.

The Golden Eagles will continue their road trip with another conference matchup against Lawrence Tech on Wednesday, January 8 for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff.
