Grand Rapids, Mich. – Women's Volleyball got back in action today inside Mol Arena for a heavy hitting conference matchup with the Blue Devils. The Golden Eagles weathered the storm well and ran away in the end with a 3-1 match victory. This match highlighted well from all over the court as the Golden Eagles now prep for a match on Friday, October 3
rd against Madonna at 7:00 PM.
Game Recap – #RV Cornerstone – 3 Lawrence Tech – 1 (25-16, 20-25, 25-19, 25-17)
First Set: Cornerstone – 25 Lawrence Tech – 16
- Alli Pickard kicked off the strong start serving well in the first rotation of the match to help Cornerstone reach a 6-1 lead.
- The Golden Eagles continued to climb as they saw Josilyn Potter secure kills to extend the lead to 15-10.
- The VerBerkmoes sisters highlighted the final points of the match as Cornerstone went on a 7 to 1 run to close out the first set win.
Second Set: Cornerstone – 20 Lawrence Tech – 25
- The Blue Devils found some rhythm early as they jumped out to a 4-2 advantage to start the second set.
- Cornerstone stuck around in this set as they were able to tie the contest twice as we entered the final stretch.
- Lawrence Tech began to run away with set two off multiple attacking errors with the Golden Eagles just losing the momentum from the start of the match.
- Cornerstone pushed for a late comeback but fell 25-20 in set two as the Blue Devils got back on level terms in the 1-1 match.
Third Set: Cornerstone – 25 Lawrence Tech – 19
- In the third set both teams came out swinging hard as they traded points back and forth before Aubrey Johnson gained a foothold for the Golden Eagles with two strong swings as they led 10-7.
- Gabby VerBerkmoes and Josilyn Potter got in a groove as they boosted Cornerstone into a six-point run which established a commanding third set lead.
- Emmalee Murphy found two dominant kills in the end of the set to help secure the 2-1 lead in the match for the Golden Eagles.
Fourth Set: Cornerstone – 25 Lawrence Tech – 17
- Gabby VerBerkmoes was as strong as it gets with some dominant play from the middle of the court as she collected three consecutive kills to help CU inch closer to taking the match.
- Gwyn VerBerkmoes found her groove as well as she helped Cornerstone reach a 12-7 lead.
- The Golden Eagles closed out the set with ease as they make it number 15 on the season with a truly impressive 6-1 record in the WHAC conference.
