Grand Rapids, Mich. – Women's Volleyball went to battle with WHAC opponent Madonna for a Friday night showdown inside Mol Arena. The Golden Eagles fought hard in the match but ultimately, they were defeated in the fifth set. Cornerstone will look to bounce back quickly as they return for another home match on Saturday, October 4
th against Michigan-Dearborn starting at 2:00 p.m.
Game Recap – #RV Cornerstone – 2 Madonna – 3 (18-25, 25-23, 20-25, 27-25, 7-15)
First Set: Cornerstone – 18 Madonna – 25
- Madonna came out on the front foot in this match as they jumped out to 7-3 lead.
- Gabby VerBerkmoes collected a pair of kills down the stretch of the set, but Cornerstone still trailed 17-12.
- The Crusaders closed out the first set with ease as Cornerstone had some thinking to do before heading into the second set.
Second Set: Cornerstone – 25 Madonna – 23
- The Golden Eagles came out hot in the second set starting on an 8-1 run with multiple kills found by Emmalee Murphy.
- Madonna found their own groove and put together a smart comeback making the set tied at 11-11.
- Aubrey Johnson began to find her rhythm with back-to-back kills that put Cornerstone up 16-12.
- Gabby VerBerkmoes finished off a competitive set with a massive swing to even the match at 1-1.
Third Set: Cornerstone – 20 Madonna – 25
- Gabby VerBerkmoes led the way to start a pivotal third set with two kills to give CU the narrow lead.
- Madonna rushed back to tie the set at 10-10 with both teams finding strong swings.
- The Golden Eagles and Crusaders punched back and forth down the stretch, but the match remained tied up at 18 a piece.
- Madonna closed out the set on a 7-2 run as they took an important 2-1 match lead.
Fourth Set: Cornerstone – 27 Madonna – 25
- This set was simply a battle to see who could score more than one point at a time.
- Madonna went on a massive run to give them a 22-13 lead with Cornerstone facing a massive hole to climb out of.
- Josilyn Potter gathered a pair of aces in a four-point run for the Golden Eagles to cut the lead to 23-20.
- Aubrey Johnson and Gwyn VerBerkmoes carried the final few points for Cornerstone as they stormed back to take a 25-24 lead in the set.
- The Golden Eagles managed to force a fifth set through back-to-back attacking errors as each team had everything to play for in the final set.
Fifth Set: Cornerstone – 7 Madonna – 15
- Aubrey Johnson opened the final set with a pair of smooth swings to give CU the early advantage.
- The Crusaders passing continued to impress as they found a 9-4 lead in the set.
- Cornerstone could not find the momentum in the match as they fell 3-2 against Madonna.
By The Numbers:
11 – It was a block party for both teams as they each collected 11 kills on the night.
10 – The Crusaders won the ace battle with 10 to Cornerstones' six.
