Women’s Volleyball Dusts off the Brooms with a Sweep over Defiance

Grand Rapids, Mich. – Women's Volleyball faced off against the Yellow Jackets of Defiance College inside of the Mol Arena. The Golden Eagles took set one 25-18 helped on by four kills from Gabby VerBerkmoes and two service aces by Alli Pickard. Set two was a similar story, as Cornerstone ran away with it 25-18 highlighted by three service aces from Aubrey Johnson at the beginning of the set. The match finished in the third set 25-17, Cornerstone with the home sweep 3-0. Women's Volleyball continues WHAC play on Saturday, October 25th against Lourdes University at 2 p.m. inside of the Mol Arena.

Game Recap – #RV Cornerstone – 3  Defiance – 0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-17)

First Set: Cornerstone – 25 Defiance – 18

  • The first point of the match came from a Defiance College block to put the Yellow Jackets up 1-0 at the beginning of the first set.

  • Cornerstone's first point came off a kill by Gwyn VerBerkmoes to get Cornerstone in the match down 2-1.

  • The Golden Eagles' first lead of the set was thanks to a service ace from Alli Pickard. Cornerstone led 4-3.

  • Another service ace from Alli Pickard and a kill by Aubrey Johnson built Cornerstone's lead 13-9 in set one. 

  • The Yellow Jackets would never work their way back to a lead in set one, as a couple more kills from Gabby VerBerkmoes helped Cornerstone win set one 25-18.

Second Set: Cornerstone – 25 Defiance – 18

  • The first point of set two came from Gabby VerBerkmoes, as it bounced off of her head and found its way to the floor to put Cornerstone up 1-0.

  • Three service aces from Aubrey Johnson gave the Golden Eagles a 6-3 lead early in set two.

  • Multiple kills by Aubrey Johnson and a service ace forced a timeout from the Yellow Jackets as Cornerstone led in set two 17-12.

  • Emmalee Murphy got two more kills on the board to give the Golden Eagles a six point lead 21-15 in set two.

  • The second set was won by Cornerstone 25-18 after a kill from Josilyn Potter found its way through the block to finish it off.

Third Set: Cornerstone – 25 Defiance – 17

  • The Yellow Jackets grabbed the first point of set three off of an attack error by Josilyn Potter. Defiance led 1-0.

  • Gianna Warwick grabbed a service ace and Aubrey Johnson got a kill to tie up set three 3-3.

  • An attack error by Defiance handed the lead back to Cornerstone in set three 5-4.

  • Lauren Bower kept the points coming for Cornerstone as her kill made it 20-9.

  • A three point run by the Golden Eagles, helped along by a kill from Gabby VerBerkmoes, brought the set to match point for Cornerstone 24-14.

  • The Yellow Jackets fought back late in the set to make it 24-17, but one final kill by Gabby VerBerkmoes saw the match to its end 25-17.

By The Numbers:

13/.722 – Gabby VerBerkmoes led her team in kills and hitting percentage with 13 total kills off of 18 total attempts and a .722 hitting percentage.

5 – Lauren Bower led her team in total blocks, with five on the night

23/11 – Payton Hutchinson totaled 23 assists on the night, combining with her fellow setter Alison Pignataro to give the Golden Eagles 34 total assists.

Women's Volleyball continues WHAC play on Saturday, October 25th against Lourdes University at 2 p.m. inside of the Mol Arena.
