Women’s Volleyball are Successful on Senior Night

Grand Rapids, Mich. – Women's Volleyball ends off the home matches with a Senior Night battle against the Warriors of Rochester Christian University. After celebrating the lone senior Emmalee Murphy, Cornerstone got business underway. Helped on by three service aces by Aubrey Johnson to finish set one, the Golden Eagles took it 25-8. Set two was much more of a battle between the two teams as Rochester Christian kept it close for most of the set before the Golden Eagles finished it off 25-19. The third set stayed tied up for the majority of its start, but Cornerstone were able to break through and take the set 25-2 and made it a 3-0 match. Women's Volleyball looks ahead to three more road games to finish out the regular season, beginning with a match against Lawrence Tech on October 31, at 7 p.m.

Game Recap – Cornerstone – 3  Rochester – 0 (25-8, 25-19, 25-21)

First Set: Cornerstone – 25 Rochester – 8

  • Josilyn Potter opened the scoring for the Golden Eagles with a well-placed kill at the start of set one to make it 1-0.

  • A kill by Gwyn VerBerkmoes off of the block gave Cornerstone a two-point lead in set one 5-3.

  • A service ace by Alli Pickard assisted Cornerstone in a five-point run that forced the Warriors into the first timeout of the set as the Golden Eagles led 11-4 in set one.

  • Emmalee Murphy took advantage of the overpass to put the ball away and make it an 11 point lead 19-8.

  • Two more points by the Golden Eagles forced the Warriors into their second timeout as Cornerstone led in set one 21-8.

  • Three service aces in a row by Aubrey Johnson prevented Rochester from breaking into double digits in the first set as Cornerstone took it 25-8.

Second Set: Cornerstone – 25 Rochester – 19

  • Cornerstone opened up the second set with a kill by Gabby VerBerkmoes and by Aubrey Johnson to make the score 2-0.

  • Rochester Christian was able to keep set two close as the score was 8-8 early on.

  • A huge kill from the right hand of Gabby VerBerkmoes on the slide gave Cornerstone the one-point edge 11-10.

  • Two kills by Gwyn VerBerkmoes for Cornerstone helped them to a three-point run in set two to build their lead 16-13.

  • Rochester Christian took the lead 18-17 to force the Golden Eagles into their first timeout of the night in the second set.

  • Cornerstone responded out of the timeout with a four-point run to make the score 21-18.

  • The wall was put up as Josilyn Potter and Lauren Bower put up the block to win set two 25-19.

Third Set: Cornerstone – 25 Rochester – 21

  • Josilyn Potter got the first kill of the third set to put Cornerstone up 1-0.

  • A high-flying kill from Gabby VerBerkmoes tied the third set back up 3-3.

  • A kill straight through the block by Gwyn VerBerkmoes kept the third set close 6-6.

  • The set remained tied 11-11 with a Rochester Christian block midway through set three.

  • The Golden Eagles were finally able to break through and grab a 4 point lead in the third set. The Warriors took a timeout as the score was 17-13, Cornerstone on top.

  • Payton Hutchinson got up for the block to break Cornerstone into another four-point lead late in set three 20-16.

  • It was the attack error by the Warriors that was their demise in set three as Cornerstone took the set 25-21.

By The Numbers:

11 – Josilyn Potter both teams in total kills with 11 on the night off of 21 attempts to give herself a hitting percentage of .476.

4/10 – Four service aces by Aubrey Johnson, who also got 10 kills on the night helped Cornerstone put the sets away.

28 – Gianna Warwick totaled 28 digs on the night, rounding out Cornerstone's defense.

What's Next?

Women's Volleyball looks ahead to three more road games to finish out the regular season, beginning with a match against Lawrence Tech on October 31, at 7 p.m.
