Women’s Volleyball with a Fourth Sweep in a Row

Southfield, Mich. – Women's Volleyball made it four sweeps in a row against Lawrence Tech in Southfield, Mich. The first set was highlighted by a late eight point run that saw them take it 25-18. Set two was a cleaner looking set for Cornerstone as Aubrey Johnson finished it off with two kills to win that set 25-16. The third set stayed tied up for the majority of its start, but Cornerstone were able to break through and take the set 27-25 and made it a 3-0 match. Women's Volleyball looks ahead to their second last match to finish out the regular season, with a road match against the Wolverines of Michigan-Dearborn on November 7, at 7 p.m.

Game Recap – Cornerstone – 3  Lawrence Tech – 0 (25-18, 25-16, 27-25)

First Set: Cornerstone – 25 Lawrence Tech – 18

  • Gabby VerBerkmoes was the first to get a kill for the Golden Eagles, as she tied the set 1-1.

  • The Blue Devils went on a four point run early on to grab the lead 5-2.

  • The Golden Eagles would have to fight from behind in the first set, but with an eight point run they were able to close the gap 23-15.

  • Cornerstone only allowed three more points from Lawrence Tech as a kill by Gwyn VerBerkmoes finished the first set for Cornerstone 25-18.

Second Set: Cornerstone – 25 Lawrence Tech – 16

  • The beginning of the second set was highlighted by a kill and service ace from Aubrey Johnson that saw Cornerstone to an early lead 5-2.

  • A four point run by the Blue Devils saw them overtake Cornerstone momentarily in the second set 7-6.

  • Gabby VerBerkmoes finished off a three point run by Cornerstone with a kill to keep the Golden Eagles ahead 15-11.

  • Two more kills by Aubrey Johnson helped Cornerstone finish the second set with a four point run to win it 25-16.

Third Set: Cornerstone – 27 Lawrence Tech – 25

  • The third set was very back and forth as teams traded kills. Josilyn Potter started off the third set with a kill to make it 1-0.

  • Three attack errors by Lawrence Tech helped Cornerstone retake the lead 11-10.

  • Another kill from Josilyn Potter kept the Golden Eagles ahead 16-15.

  • An important three point run by the Golden Eagles gave them a three point lead 19-16.

  • Lawrence Tech saw it to set point 25-24 late in the third set.

  • Cornerstone shut down the Blue Devils as they scored the next three points, highlighted by the final kill of the night from the hand of Josilyn Potter to take set three 27-25 and the game 3-0.

By The Numbers:

13/5 – Gabby VerBerkmoes led her team in total kills with 13 and total blocks with five on the night to help see the sweep of the Blue Devils to reality.

2/4 – With two service aces for the Golden Eagles, Olivia Endris led the way for her team, while also defending well with four digs on the night.

20 – Alison Pignataro led her team in assists as she had 20 on the night.

21 - Cornerstone's defense was well held together by another strong performance from the freshman Gianna Warwick who had 21 total digs..

What's Next?

Women's Volleyball looks ahead to their second last match to finish out the regular season, with a road match against the Wolverines of Michigan-Dearborn on November 7, at 7 p.m.
