Grand Rapids, Mich. – Men's Soccer saw another close match fall out of their grips as the Saints walked away with a 2-1 victory over the Golden Eagles.
Calvin Curtis bagged his fourth goal of the season to level things early in the second half, but a penalty kick was the decider late. The Golden Eagles now shift focus to Lourdes as they travel for a 7:00 p.m. match on Saturday, October 11
th.
Game Recap: Cornerstone – 1 Siena Heights – 2
First Half:
- Siena Heights entered the game on the front foot with strong possession in the first five minutes of the match.
- The Saints opened the scoring on the night, stemming from a flurry of shots in the box that they buried home from just outside the six-yard line.
- The Golden Eagles saw their first strong chance of the match come in the 17th minute, but the Gavan Bignall's shot was just saved.
- Gavan Bignall found his second chance of the first half with a chaotic ball that set up a shot just inside the box, but he pushed his shot inches wide of the right post.
- Calvin Curtis looked to take advantage of a free kick in the 29th minute of the match but his shot just sailed high as they Golden Eagles continued to trail 1-0.
- The Saints saw a stellar opportunity to double their lead just a minute later, but the shot was dragged wide.
- Roberto Gutierrez was forced to make two more saves to keep the halftime score at 1-0 for the Golden Eagles.
Second Half:
- The Golden Eagles came out of the half swinging as Eli Leegwater played a beautiful long ball that led to a smooth Calvin Curtis finish to tie the match at 1-1.
- Calvin Curtis was back on the ball once again holding up play nicely and drawing the first yellow card of the match on the Saints midfielder.
- Cornerstone continued to put the pressure on Saints and the chippy game earned Siena Heights their second yellow card of the half.
- Jadon Strawser came into the match and nearly made an instant impact, but his volley shot was just too high for the Golden Eagles in the 58th minute.
- Both sides continued to fight to find the next goal in the match as it remained 1-1 at the 76th minute.
- The Saints managed to find their second lead of the match from the penalty spot as the Golden Eagles defending was just too aggressive inside the box as Cornerstone only had 11 minutes left to find another equalizer.
- The Golden Eagles pushed hard and found a lot of pressure inside the Saints box but were unable to find the needed goal as they fell 2-1 to Siena Heights.
