DAVENPORT, Fla. – Baseball returned to action this afternoon to take on Grand View for their second day in the sun. The Golden Eagles would start slow but picked it up late, but it wasn't enough in a 16-7 loss.
Michael Ruiz highlighted the offense on the day with the first Golden Eagle homerun as he drove in three. Baseball will be back in action tomorrow morning as they take on Mount Vernon Nazarene at 11 a.m. as they look for their first victory of the year.
Game Recap: Grand View – 16 Cornerstone - 7
- Grand View struck first in the bottom of the first as a bases loaded walk gave them an early 1-0 lead. They would later bring in one more on a single as Alex Hayward would limit the damage to just two runs.
- After two quick outs in the bottom of the second, Grand View used a two out rally that was highlighted by a two-run homerun to take a 5-0 lead over the Golden Eagles.
- Grand View has scored a run in each inning to begin the game as a one out double eventually comes home on a single as the Vikings lead 6-0. They would bring home another a couple batters later as it is now 7-0 after the third.
- Through five innings at the plate, the Golden Eagles have been held hitless by the Grand View starter.
- After Michael Ruiz reached on an error, Jack Gagliardi recorded the first hit for the Golden Eagles as runners are on first and second in the top of the sixth. Cornerstone would later strand the runner on third as the Vikings continue to lead 7-0.
- After two innings of no runs, Grand Views bats woke up in the bottom of the sixth as their second two-run homerun of the game gave them a 10-0 lead over the Golden Eagles.
- Corbin Westerkamp led off the top of seventh with a double down the left field line as the Golden Eagles would load the bases with one out in the top of the seventh. Cornerstone would get on the board thanks to two wild pitches, a walk, and a hit by pitch as the Vikings continued to lead 10-4.
- Grand View took advantage of a Golden Eagle error and scratched across another run as it is now 11-4 in the eighth.
- Michael Ruiz hit the first Golden Eagle homer as his three-run homerun over the left field fence made it an 11-7 game in the top of the eighth. Cornerstone has scored seven times in the last two innings.
- The Vikings continued to move the line in the bottom of the eighth as with three runs already in, they have the bases loaded with no outs as they lead 14-7. They would later score two more as the game heads into the ninth with Grand View leading 16-7.
- Cornerstone would lead off the inning with singles from Matthew Kindley and Corbin Westerkamp but that was all they could muster as they fall to Grand View 16-7.
