Grand Rapids, Mich. – Baseball found their losing streak come to an end as they protected their home field well in the first game of the double-header. The Golden Eagles strong hitting propelled them to a 12-9 victory as they got back to winning ways. Game two Cornerstone found similar success from the plate but could not convert from the mound as they fell 14-7. The Golden Eagles have a quick turnaround as they host Lawrence Tech for another pair of games on Saturday, March 15
th.
Game One Recap: Cornerstone – 12 Cleary – 9
- The start of the double-header belonged to the Cougars who struck through three runs in the top of the 2nd inning to find the early lead.
- Corbin Westerkamp was the hero for the Golden Eagles in the bottom of the 2nd with a three-run homer to even the playing field for the home team.
- Cleary did not hesitate to turn up the heat in the very next inning as they tallied a 7-3 lead thanks to some pitching struggles from Cornerstone.
- Cleary returned the favor in the next inning with pitching issues of their own to give Cornerstone one run at the end of the 3rd.
- Matthew Kindley tallied the second home run of the day for the Golden Eagles as they only trailed 7-6 headed into the final stretch of the game.
- Cornerstone found hits from all over the lineup in the 5th inning as they created six more runs and finally gained the lead at 12-8.
- Cornerstone held on to game one of the double-header with a 12-9 victory to secure their first win of the season.
Game Two Recap: Cornerstone – 7 Cleary – 14
- Game two started off well for Cleary once again as they found themselves with a 2-1 lead after the first inning.
- Both teams struggled to find scores until the 3rd inning when Grant DeRose started off the Golden Eagles with a base hit and stolen base.
- Matthew Kindley tripled to the back right wall to bring in another run for Cornerstone and tie the game at 2-2 a piece.
- It was not long until Cornerstone took the lead as they saw Jack Gagliardi drive in more runs as the home squad led 4-2 at the bottom of the 3rd.
- Cornerstone cruised through the bottom of the 5th as they continued to hold a 4-2 lead.
- The top of the 6th inning was one to forget for the Golden Eagles as Cleary turned the game on its head as they tallied 11 runs in the inning with serious pitching trouble from Cornerstone.
- The Golden Eagles rallied back with a few runs but, ultimately the game fizzed out as Cleary secured the 14-7 victory in game two of the double-header.
