GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Baseball returned to action with a conference doubleheader against Lourdes and came away with two tough losses. In game one, Cornerstone jumped out to a big 6-1 lead, but Lourdes used a big seven run inning and never looked back on their way to a 10-8 victory. In game two, pitching dominated until late as Lourdes hit a two-run homerun in the ninth to sweep the doubleheader 5-4 in game two. Baseball falls to 2-20 (2-4 WHAC) on the year as they will be back in action on Friday, March 28 against Aquinas.
Game One Recap: Lourdes – 10 Cornerstone – 8
- Steve Hoeksema worked a quick 1-2-3 inning to open the game thanks to three straight popouts to get the bats up to the plate.
- Corbin Westerkamp came through in the bottom of the second with an RBI double to give Cornerstone an early 1-0 lead. Westerkamp would later score on a wild pitch to make it 2-0 after the second.
- Luke Griffith would come through with an RBI single in the bottom of the third to extend Cornerstones lead 3-0. The Golden Eagles would tack on one more thanks to another wild pitch to make it 4-0 after the third.
- Lourdes tacked on a run in the top of the fourth thanks to sac fly to make it 4-1.
- Back-to-back hits from Drew Goodman and Luke Griffith plated a run for the Golden Eagles in the bottom of the fourth to make it a 6-1 game.
- It was a long inning for the Golden Eagles in the top of the fifth as free bases haunted them, allowing Lourdes to score seven runs to take an 8-6 lead over the Golden Eagles.
- The Golden Eagles scored one back in the bottom of the fifth thanks to a Grant DeRose bloop single to make it 8-7 game after the fifth.
- Lourdes would grab an insurance run the sixth inning thanks to an RBI groundout to make it 9-7.
- Jack Gagliardi came through with a single into left field in the bottom of the sixth to make it a one run game once again.
- For the third straight inning, Lourdes scored as their insurance run made it 10-8 as the Golden Eagles had one last chance in the bottom of the seventh.
- After the first two batters reached, Lourdes induced a double play to squander a threat from the Golden Eagles, later striking out the final batter to win their first game of the year, 10-8 over Cornerstone.
Game Two Recap: Lourdes – 5 Cornerstone - 4
- Conner Comiskey has worked back-to-back clean innings with a pair of strikeouts to open the second game of the doubleheader.
- Corbin Westerkamp hit a one-out triple and would later come home on a single from Michael Ruiz to give Cornerstone a 1-0 lead. Grant DeRose would later bring home Ruiz on a single up the middle to make it 2-0 heading into the third inning.
- Conner Comiskey continued to shut down the bats of the Gray Wolves as he pitched another scoreless inning in the fourth.
- Not much offense going for either teams as the Golden Eagles lead the Gray Wolves 2-0 as the game headed to the sixth.
- Lourdes strung together some hits in the sixth inning to get on the board, making it 2-1 as they have runners on the corner with one out. They would tie the game on a bad pickoff attempt to make it a new ballgame in the sixth.
- The Gray Wolves took their first lead of the game in the seventh as they led off the inning with a solo homerun to make it 3-2.
- Luke Griffith would tie the game in the bottom of the seventh with a one-out double in right field to make it 3-3. Corbin Westerkamp would later come through with a single to help retake the lead 4-3 after the end of the seventh.
- With two-outs in the top of the ninth, Lawrence Tech hit a homerun right past the outstretched glove of Westerkamp to take a 5-4 lead.
- Cornerstone left runners on first and second in the bottom of the ninth as they would fall in game two to Lourdes 5-4.
