GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Baseball welcomed crosstown rival Aquinas for a conference doubleheader and came away two tough losses. Cornerstone opened the first game hot, hitting back-to-back-to-back homeruns to take a quick 4-0 lead but Aquinas slowly chipped away all game defeating the Golden Eagles 6-5. In game two,
Conner Comiskey pitched five great innings to keep Cornerstone in this game before a nine-run eighth inning proving to be the difference maker in a 11-2 loss. Baseball falls to 2-22 (2-6) on the year as they will be right back in action tomorrow afternoon at Concordia starting at 1 p.m.
Game One Recap: Aquinas – 6 Cornerstone - 5
- With two outs in the bottom of the first, Luke Griffith would hit a two-run homerun to give Cornerstone an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. A couple pitchers later, Drew Goodman would follow Griffith with a homerun of his own to make it 3-0. Corbin Westerkamp swung at the first pitch and hit a homerun over the right field fence to make it back-to-back-to-back to make it 4-0 after the first.
- Steve Hoeksema worked around a second and third jam in the top of the third to keep Aquinas off the board as the Golden Eagles continued to lead 4-0.
- The Saints strung together some hits in the top of the fourth as a single into center field scored two as it is now 4-2.
- The Golden Eagles would answer right away in the bottom of the fourth as back-to-back doubles from Jack Gagliardi and Michael Ruiz made it 5-2 as the game headed to the fifth.
- Aquinas loaded the bases with nobody out to begin the fifth inning. They would scratch across two thanks to a hit by pitch and a double play to make it 5-4.
- Back-to-back doubles by the Saints saw them take a 6-5 lead over the Golden Eagles as the game headed into the bottom of the sixth.
- With one out in the bottom of the sixth, Corbin Westerkamp would hit a triple but he would be stranded there as the Golden Eagles left a golden opportunity.
- Grant DeRose would hit a single with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but Aquinas would induce a game ending double play to escape the Golden Eagles with a 6-5 victory.
Game Two Recap: Aquinas – 11 Cornerstone – 2
- A good defensive play in the top of the first helped the Golden Eagles get out of the jam to keep the game scoreless heading into bottom of the first.
- Luke Griffith opened the second inning with a triple and would come home on a Drew Goodman single to make it 1-0 Cornerstone.
- Conner Comiskey has continued to keep Aquinas off the board as his second straight 1-2-3 inning kept Cornerstone ahead 1-0 after the fourth.
- The game heads into the sixth inning with the Golden Eagles ahead of Aquinas 1-0.
- Aquinas opened the sixth inning with back-to-back singles to put pressure on Comiskey. The Saints would later tie the game on a groundout and then take the lead 2-1 thanks to a Golden Eagle error.
- Drew Goodman would respond right away in the bottom of the sixth with a solo homerun to tie the game at two.
- Three straight hits by the Saints saw them take a 5-2 advantage over the Golden Eagles. The inning has kept going for Aquinas as a couple more hits made it 8-2. The Saint capped off a nine-run inning with a stolen base to make it 11-2 after the top of the eighth.
- Cornerstone threatened in the bottom of the eighth but stranded runners on first and third as the game headed into the ninth inning.
- Aquinas sweeps the Golden Eagles with a game two 11-2 victory.
