DAVENPORT, Fla. – Baseball returned to action with a double header against Calumet, looking for their first wins of the year. It was tight contest in game one that saw four extra innings worth of baseball, but it ended in heartbreak as Calumet scored one in the 11
th to win 4-3. In game two, Calumet scored early in often on their way to a 13-2 routing of the Golden Eagles. Cornerstone now drops to 0-12 on the year as they will look to rebound with a game against Dordt tomorrow afternoon at 1:15 p.m.
Game One Recap: Calumet – 4 Cornerstone – 3 F/11
- Christian Burgess worked around a bases loaded jam with a strikeout to keep Calumet off the board in the top of the first.
- Grant DeRose drove in Andrew Eley with an RBI single in the bottom of the first to give Cornerstone an early 1-0 lead.
- A nice defensive play from Cam Keatley gunned the runner trying for home in the top of the second to keep Calumet off the board.
- Calumet put one on the board in the third thanks to a double down the left field line to tie it at one. The batter tried extending to third on the throw home but was thrown out at third thanks to Jake Sewell's throw.
- Calumet took the lead in the top of the fourth thanks to a single into right field as a next batter hit by pitch would load the bases. The Crimson Wave would score one more on a sac fly to make it 3-1.
- Back-to-back doubles from Corbin Westerkamp and Andrew Eley helped Cornerstone scratch home a run as they are down 3-2. Jake Sewell would come through with a single to score Eley to tie the game at three after the fifth inning.
- Ryan McArthur worked a clean sixth inning with a strikeout to get the bats back up to the plate.
- The Golden Eagles stranded a runner on third in the bottom of the sixth as the game heads into the final inning tied at three.
- Ryan McArthur worked around a runner on second with a strikeout to give the Golden Eagle batters a chance to walk it off in the bottom of the seventh.
- The game heads to extras tied at three.
- Cam Keatley and Luke Griffith opened the bottom of the eighth with back-to-back singles to get a runner in scoring position. Another single from Trent Spalding loaded the bases with one out. Calumet worked some magic to get out of the jam to send the game into the ninth.
- Brody Nelson worked his second straight efficient inning to get the bats back up to the plate in the bottom of the ninth.
- The game heads to the tenth with Calumet and Cornerstone tied at three.
- The Golden Eagles strand a runner a second as the game heads to the eleventh.
- After two quick outs, Calumet hits a solo homerun to take a 4-3 advantage, but the Golden Eagles have one last chance in the bottom of the inning.
- Cornerstone goes down quick in the bottom of the eleventh as they lose to Calumet 4-3.
Game Two Recap: Calumet – 13 Cornerstone - 2
- Corbin Westerkamp led off the game with a single and was later stranded on third to open the first inning.
- Calumet got on the board right away in the bottom of the first as they scratched across two to take a 2-0 lead into the second.
- The Crimson Wave collected some hits and would drive in a run on a grounder to extend their lead 3-0 after the third.
- Cornerstone hasn't had anything going through four innings of play as they have been held to one hit.
- Calumet has exploded for a 10-run inning to blow open this game as it is now 13-0 as it heads to the sixth.
- Andrew Eley double down the line with one out and Matthew Kindley followed with a single up the middle to make it 13-1. Cam Keatley would bring home another on a grounder to make it 13-2 after the top of the sixth.
- Cornerstone falls in game two 13-2 to Calumet.
