DAVENPORT, Fla. – Baseball returned to action with a rematch against Northwestern early Thursday afternoon. The Raiders got the best of the Golden Eagles once again 12-7 in nine innings. After coming back to make it a one run game, Northwestern would use a big four-run eighth to make it out or reach for Cornerstone. The defense of the Golden Eagles struggled, committing five errors in the loss that sees them fall to 0-14 on the year. Baseball has two games left in Florida as they face off against Valley City tomorrow afternoon starting at 3:45 p.m.
Game Recap: Northwestern – 12 Cornerstone - 7
- Andrew Eley hit a one out double to give Cornerstone runners on second and third in the top of the first. Luke Griffith would come through with a sac fly to give Cornerstone an early 1-0 lead.
- Northwestern would hit a double of their own in the bottom of the first to get runners on second and third with no outs. The Raiders would score two on a double to take a 2-1 advantage. They would scratch one more across on a single to make it 3-1 after the first.
- The Raiders extended their lead 4-1 over the Golden Eagles thanks to wild pitch in the bottom of the second.
- Northwestern would bring home a leadoff triple to make it a 5-1 game after the fourth inning.
- The game heads into the sixth inning with Northwestern winning 5-1. Steve Hoeksema just worked a quick 1-2-3 inning.
- A sun aided triple from Michael Ruiz scored a run to make it 5-2 as Grant DeRose would follow with a single up to the middle to make it 5-3 in the sixth.
- A one out double from the Raiders saw them make it 6-3 as they continued to have runners on second and third. The next batter would follow with a double of their own to make it an 8-3 game as Northwestern added some cushion.
- Michael Ruiz hit his second straight extra base hit as this time, his double brought in two runs in the eighth to make it 8-5 with no outs. The Golden Eagles would score two more in the inning to make it 8-7.
- The Golden Eagles struggled defensively in the bottom of the eighth as they committed three errors that led to two Raider runs to make it 10-7. A triple would later score two more for Northwestern as they have opened the game, 12-7 as it heads to the ninth.
- Northwestern shuts down the Golden Eagle bats in the ninth on their way to a 12-7 victory.
