GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Baseball welcomed UM-Dearborn for their final home games of the year and came away with a needed sweep.
Connor Comiskey pitched brilliantly in game one going six strong innings as the Golden Eagles took game one 7-3.
Mason Leckrone followed in Comiskey's steps game two, but a late rally saw Dearborn take the lead until
Drew Goodman's walk off double sealed the sweep for Cornerstone in an 8-7 victory. Baseball moves to 10-30 (10-14) on the year as they will face off against Madonna on Friday, April 25 for their next conference matchup.
Game One Recap: Cornerstone – 7 UM-Dearborn - 3
- The Golden Eagles loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the first. Cornerstone would score the first run on a wild pitch and Drew Goodman would follow with a bases clearing double to make it 3-0.
- Michigan-Dearborn would respond right away in the second as a single up the middle would score two to make it a 3-2 game.
- Connor Comiskey struck out the side in the top of the fourth as he has settled in since the second inning as the Golden Eagles continued to lead 3-2.
- Big hits from Grant DeRose and Matthew Kindley saw the Golden Eagles score four runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend their lead 7-2 over UM-Dearborn.
- Michigan-Dearborn loaded the bases in the top of the seventh with one out, all thanks to free bases. They would score one on a fielder's choice, but Bobby Kelly would shut the door on game one with a 7-3 victory.
Game Two Recap: Cornerstone – 8 UM-Dearborn - 7
- A leadoff walk comes around to score in the top of the first as a single into right field makes it 1-0 UM-Dearborn.
- Cornerstone answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the first as a wild pitch saw Andrew Eley score to tie it at one.
- The Golden Eagles got some help from the wind as a wind aided single from Michael Ruiz scored a run to make it 2-1 Cornerstone.
- Cornerstone stranded a runner at third as the game headed into the fourth inning with the Golden Eagles still ahead 2-1.
- A two-out error by the Golden Eagles came back to hurt as a single into right field scored one as it is now tied 2-2 after the top of the fourth.
- DJ Phillips gave Cornerstone the lead with a triple to make it 3-2 as there are still one out in the inning. Cam Keatley would bring Phillips home on a sac fly as it is now 4-2 after the fourth inning.
- UM-Dearborn would get a run right back in the top of the fifth as a single through the left side scored one to make it 4-3 as Mason Leckrone would later get out of the jam.
- The runs kept coming for the Golden Eagles as a single from Andrew Eley brought home Steve Hoeksema to make it 5-3 in the bottom of the fifth.
- Michigan-Dearborn continues to come through with two outs as a triple down the right field line made it a 5-4 game in the seventh inning.
- Andrew Eley led off the bottom of the seventh with a double and would later come home on a Corbin Westerkamp double to make it 6-4.
- Michigan-Dearborn loaded the bases in the top of the eighth with one out, threatening the Golden Eagles. With two outs once again, the Wolverines came through with a single to tie the game at six. UM-Dearborn would then take advantage of a Cornerstone error to take a 7-6 advantage, a big swing in the game.
- Cornerstone stranded the Dearborn runner on third in the top of the ninth as the game heads into the final half of the inning with the Golden Eagles trailing 7-6.
- A leadoff walk came home to score for the Golden Eagles as Matthew Kindley beat out an infield single to first, in doing so, the first baseman tripped over Kindley resulting in Hoeksema racing home to tie the game at seven. Drew Goodman would then put the final touch on senior night with a double into centerfield to walk off Michigan-Dearborn 8-7.
