Calvin Curtis highlights the season opener with the lone goal for Men’s Soccer

Box Score Fort Wayne, Ind.  – The Golden Eagles kicked off the 2025 campaign with a statement victory over Saint Francis. Cornerstone saw one shot on target taken in the match that was capitalized by Calvin Curtis in the early second half. The Golden Eagles went on to weather the heavy attack from the Cougars as they secured the 1-0 victory. Men's Soccer returns home for their next matchup against Saint Xavier on Wednesday, August 27th at 5:00 p.m. 
 
Game Recap: Cornerstone – 1 Saint Francis – 0
 
First Half
  • The first couple shots of the match belonged to Saint Francis, but Cornerstone did not shy away from creating possession in the Cougars half. 
  • Only eight minutes into the match Steven Stidham saw a golden chance to score but his shot sailed just high above the bar. 
  • Roberto Gutierrez was forced to make his first save of the game in the 25th minute with the score still deadlocked. 
  • The match remained scoreless into the 35th minute of the first half with only two shots on goal both coming from the Cougars.
  • The Golden Eagles won the last five minutes of the half with strong counter attacking play which set up multiple set pieces, but they were unable to capitalize. 
  • The match was deadlocked at 0-0 at the end of the first half between the Cougars and Golden Eagles. 
Second Half
  • The second half started quickly once again for the Cougars which forced Roberto Gutierrez to make a fantastic diving safe to his right. 
  • Saint Francis tallied two quick corners in the first few minutes but found no joy with the game remaining at 0-0. 
  • The heavy flurry of high pressure resulting in corner kicks continued for the Cougars, but the Cornerstone defense held strong. 
  • Finally with a cheeky skill move past the keeper Calvin Curtis opened the scoring giving Cornerstone a 1-0 lead at the 59th minute of the match. 
  • The defensive stand began immediately with pressure coming from the Cougars as they trailed by a goal. 
  • One of the best chances of the day came to Saint Francis but the shot was dragged just right keeping the Golden Eagles lead intact. 
  • The Cougars looked to the bench to find fresh legs late in the match with only 12 minutes remaining to find an equalizer.
  • The Golden Eagles surrendered yet another strong chance, but the shot was taken wide in the 71stminute with the defense looking tough. 
  • With the score stuck at 1-0 in the 85th minute Cornerstone continued to hold strong with countless opportunities falling in front of net for the Cougars. 
  • The frustration for the Cougars resulted in Marcelo Cerna being sent off after two yellow cards forcing them to play a man down for the final three minutes of the match. 
  • The Golden Eagles were rewarded for their defensive masterpiece as they closed it out to take home the 1-0 victory.

Saint Francis tallied 17 total shots compared to Cornerstones 5 in the match. 
Roberto Gutierrez collected all 7 saves in the game. 
The Cougars were dominant from the corner flag, taking 8 in the match.

The Golden Eagles next matchup comes against Saint Xavier on Wednesday, August 27th at 5:00 p.m. for their home opener.
