Women’s Volleyball closes out the Onset Tournament with a 2-0 day

Fort Wayne, Ind. – Women's Volleyball put it all together on the court today with strong wins over Columbia International and Saint Francis. The Golden Eagles only dropped one set on the day and relied on Aubrey Johnson as she collected 30 kills across both matches. Cornerstone will look to keep things rolling on Wednesday, August 27th at 7:00 p.m. for a matchup with Spring Arbor on the road. 
 
Game Recap – #RV Cornerstone – 3 Columbia – 1 (25-13, 25-20, 22-25, 25-17)

 
First Set: Cornerstone – 25 Columbia – 14
  • The beginning of the match belonged to Columbia as they jumped out to an early 3-1 advantage.
  • The Cornerstone offense then sparked for seven straight points through their three big hitters up front as they forced the Rams into a timeout and led the set 8-3. 
  • The Rams responded right away with a four-point run of their own, but it did not last long as Cornerstone regained another strong lead at12-7. 
  • Payton Hutchinson continued to deal the ball early for the Golden Eagles setting up a strong advantage headed into the final few points of the set. 
  • The ladies finished off set one with a 10-1 run boosted by kills from Gabby VerBerkmoes and Gwyneth VerBerkmoes down the stretch. 
Second Set: Cornerstone – 25 Columbia – 20
  • Emmalee Murphy found herself a kill early in the second set as Cornerstone continued to roll leading 6-2. 
  • Strong defense at the net from the Golden Eagles combined with attacking errors from the Rams boosted CU to a 13-5 lead. 
  • Gwyneth VerBerkmoes tallied three more kills for Cornerstone to help them lead 17-8. 
  • The Golden Eagles controlled the set with an 11-point advantage but lightened up which allowed the Rams to make a seven-point run and force the ladies to think things over. 
  • Josilyn Potter benefited the most from the timeout with a kill and ace to lead Cornerstone to a 2-0 lead in the match. 
Third Set: Cornerstone – 22 Columbia – 25
  • Columbia sparked into shape to start the third set with a dominant 12-2 start. 
  • Payton Hutchinson continued to deal which allowed CU to bring the set back to a 13-7 deficit. 
  • Right when Cornerstone felt they had a grip it was taken away by the Rams with strong hitting in the third. 
  • Aubrey Johnson made a strong push for the comeback leading the Golden Eagles to seven straight points, but it was just too far out of reach as they dropped the set 25-22. 
Fourth Set: Cornerstone – 25 Columbia – 17
  • Gritty play from all over the court told the story early as the ladies jumped out to an 8-3 lead. 
  • The Rams were able to pull within two points of the Golden Eagles, but it was once again a struggle as Cornerstone tallied four more points to force a Rams second set timeout. 
  • Payton Hutchinson continued to build on her strong performance with a service ace to give the Golden Eagles a 20-15 advantage late. 
  • Kills by Josilyn Potter and Gwyneth VerBerkmoes secured the 3-1 match victory for the Golden Eagles. 
Game Recap – #RV Cornerstone – 3 Saint Francis – 0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-14)
 
First Set: Cornerstone – 25 Saint Francis – 18
  • The first set began with multiple attacking errors that resulted in Cornerstone jumping out to a 4-3 narrow lead. 
  • Aubrey Johnson collected two kills with Cornerstone on level terms at 8-8 with the Cougars. 
  • The Ladies finally found the grip they wanted in set one and went on a 6-1 run to jump out to a five-point advantage. 
  • Gabby VerBerkmoes and Gwyneth VerBerkmoes continued their strong Onset Tournament with more kills in the first set against Saint Francis as the Golden Eagles led 17-11. 
  • The Cougars struggled with errors in the end of the set giving Cornerstone the 25-18 set victory. 
Second Set: Cornerstone – 25 Saint Francis – 18
  • Josilyn Potter and Aubrey Johnson got hot to start the set taking a quick 8-4 lead in favor of the Golden Eagles. 
  • The match continued strong for Cornerstone as back and forth points were being shared down the stretch. 
  • It was more of the same from the Cornerstone front line which resulted in yet another Golden Eagle 25-18 set win. 
Third Set: Cornerstone – 25 Saint Francis – 14
  • The Cougars looked to be finding their groove in the third set with a 4-2 lead over the Golden Eagles. 
  • Cornerstone responded immediately taking a 10-7 lead and forced a Saint Francis timeout.
  • Payton Hutchinson found herself all over the floor dishing out assists left and right which gave CU the 17-11 lead. 
  • Cornerstone closed out their dominant sweep taking 9 of the last 12 points to finish the match. 
By The Numbers:
The Golden Eagles swung well averaging a .230 kill rate for the day. 
Cornerstone only dropped one set across both games today. 
The Ladies put together their second consecutive sweep of the season and move to 3-1 on the season.

Women's Volleyball continues their road trip with the next matchup against Spring Arbor on Wednesday, August 27th at 7:00 p.m.
