Grand Rapids, Mich. – Women's Volleyball was in dominant form today as they rolled past IUSB and Bethel. The ladies only played six sets on the day thanks to back-to-back sweeps. Cornerstone will look to take another step forward in their season on Friday, September 5
th at 7:00p.m. for their home opener against #RV Lindsey Wilson.
Game Recap – #RV Cornerstone – 3 IUSB – 0 (26-24, 25-14, 25-22)
First Set: Cornerstone – 26 IUSB – 24
- The ladies struggled out of the blocks to begin the match as they dropped eight of the first 10 points.
- A much-needed timeout sparked a three-point run as they looked to inch closer to the Titans early in the set.
- Aubrey Johnson collected a few kills to begin narrowing the lead as the Golden Eagles trailed 16-12.
- Cornerstone looked as if set one was gone with a 20-13 deficit, but small mental errors began to pile for IU South Bend.
- Payton Hutchinson gathered back-to-back service aces for the Golden Eagles, yet the Titans sat on set point with a four-point cushion.
- Gwyneth VerBerkmoes and Payton Hutchinson put together two nice swings to keep the hopes alive with the set now at 24-22.
- IU South Bend began to fumble the lead with Aubrey Johnson taking over on three straight kills which set up Josilyn Potter to steal set one at 26-24.
Second Set: Cornerstone – 25 IUSB – 14
- Gabby VerBerkmoes kept the momentum rolling into set two with a kill that pushed CU into a 6-4 advantage.
- The Golden Eagles leaned on Ava Ford with two consecutive aces to give them a massive 12-6 lead and break the Titans spirit.
- A flurry of attacking errors from IU South Bend gave Cornerstone a 17-9 advantage late in the set.
- Aubrey Johnson and Gwyneth VerBerkmoes closed out the dominant second set as Cornerstone rolled into a 2-0 lead in the match.
Third Set: Cornerstone – 25 IUSB – 22
- Emmalee Murphy began to fill up the stat sheet with multiple kills leading to the Golden Eagles 9-8 narrow advantage.
- The Titans continued to fight in the set as they tied things up at 13-13.
- Cornerstone then showed their poise with a four-point run to begin taking full grip of the set.
- Alison Pignataro found herself with a nice swing and kill as the Golden Eagles could start to feel the victory.
- Josilyn Potter closed out the third set with back-to-back kills which secured the sweep over IU South Bend in the ladies first match of the day.
Game Recap – #RV Cornerstone – 3 Bethel– 0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-23)
First Set: Cornerstone – 25 Bethel – 17
- The Golden Eagles momentum did not take long to translate into game two of the day with a quick 4-0 lead in the first set.
- Bethel responded right away with four points of their own to get back on level terms.
- Gwyneth VerBerkmoes rallied well with multiple strong swings that forced Bethel into a timeout as CU led 15-10.
- The kills from the Golden Eagles could not be stopped as they reached a strong flow.
- Josilyn Potter collected two service aces near the end of the set to secure a dominant 1-0 lead in the match.
Second Set: Cornerstone – 25 Bethel – 16
- Emmalee Murphy and Lydia Uganski got rolling in the second set with kills to give Cornerstone a narrow 10-8 advantage.
- The momentum was kept up well by Gabby VerBerkmoes with her back-to-back kills as this stretched the CU lead to five points.
- Bethel took a much-needed timeout which helped them reach within a point of the Golden Eagles down 17-16.
- Cornerstone was forced into a timeout of their own but after this they never looked back.
- The Golden Eagles took the last eight points of the set to take yet another demanding 2-0 lead.
Third Set: Cornerstone – 25 Bethel – 23
- The Pilots finally began to find their groove in the third set as they jumped out to an 8-4 lead.
- Cornerstone responded well with a five-point run thanks to kills from Gabby VerBerkmoes and Emmalee Murphy.
- Aubrey Johnson got back in on the action as well finding multiple kills to keep the Golden Eagles on track up 14-11.
- Cornerstone then forced the Pilots into a timeout as they led 17-13.
- Bethel refused to quit as they just hung around down the stretch hoping to force the game into another set.
- Bethel found themselves only down 24-23 forcing a CU timeout but the Golden Eagles rallied quickly to take the final match point.
