Women’s Volleyball ends up on the wrong end of a five-set thriller against hometown rival Aquinas

Grand Rapids, Mich. – Women's Volleyball competed in another battle of the beltline this time inside Mol Arena. The Ladies came out swinging taking the first set of the match, but Aquinas responded quickly taking a 2-1 lead in the match. The Golden Eagles fight never stopped as they forced the match into a fifth set but fell just shy in the end to the Saints. Cornerstone will look to bounce back on Wednesday, September 17 at 7:00 p.m. for their next conference battle at Rochester Christian. 
 
Game Recap – #RV Cornerstone – 2 #24 Aquinas – 3 (25-18, 21-25, 21-25, 28-26, 13-15)

 
First Set: Cornerstone – 25 Aquinas – 18
  • The Golden Eagles came flying out of the gates with Josilyn Potter collecting three early kills with Cornerstone out to a dominant 8-0 lead. 
  • Gabby VerBerkmoes had everyone inside Mol Arena on their feet with back-to-back kills to keep Cornerstone moving forward.
  • Alli Pickard service ace awarded Cornerstone a 20-11 lead in the first set. 
  • Cornerstone closed out the set off multiple Saints attacking errors. 
Second Set: Cornerstone – 21 Aquinas – 25
  • The second set belonged to Aquinas as they forced Cornerstone into a timeout up 6-1 early. 
  • Payton Hutchinson served well to bring the match level at 13-13. 
  • The Saints refused to quit which led them to a second set victory. 
Third Set: Cornerstone – 21 Aquinas – 25
  • Another dominant start for the Saints told the story early in the third set as they gained a 7-3 advantage. 
  • Cornerstone looked to inch closer in the match only down a couple points as they headed into the final stretch of the set. 
  • Aquinas finished off another strong set performance as they inched past CU and took a 2-1 match lead. 
Fourth Set: Cornerstone – 28 Aquinas – 26
  • Aubrey Johnson began to take over the court with kills and aces as Cornerstone found themselves tied 7-7 to begin a pivotal fourth set. 
  • The back-and-forth battle continued but Aquinas was able to nudge their squad into an 18-16 lead. 
  • The fight never stopped for Cornerstone as they flipped the script taking a 24-22 lead forcing the Saints into their first timeout of the set. 
  • Josilyn Potter extended this match with a final point ace to bring the match into a decisive fifth set. 
Fifth Set: Cornerstone – 13 Aquinas – 15 
  • The attacking errors burned the Saints fast as Cornerstone took a 3-1 lead to start the fifth. 
  • Lydia Uganski continued to make her presence known at the net with a solo block to give CU a 9-7 lead. 
  • Aquinas built off the high tempo play and stole massive points down the stretch to seal their five-set victory over the Golden Eagles. 
By The Numbers:
70 – The Saints out killed Cornerstone 70 to 46 on the match.
13 – Cornerstone did show their dominance at the net with 13 total blocks. 
16 – The Golden Eagles saw a 16 set unbeaten run come to an end today after set two of the match. 
 
What's Next?
Women's Volleyball will continue conference play on Wednesday, September 17 on the road against Rochester Christian at 7:00 p.m.
