Kayden Bird Leads Men’s Basketball to a Statement Win Past Aquinas

Grand Rapids, Mich. - The Golden Eagles went head to head with the hometown rival Aquinas inside Mol Arena for their first meeting of the season. The Golden Eagles got knocked down early after trailing 7-0 but never looked back after that moment taking home the win 95-83. Cornerstone will look to build off this performance on Saturday, January 17th as they host #RV Lourdes at 3:00 p.m. 

Game Highlights: Cornerstone - 95 Aquinas - 83 

First Half

  • The Saints came out with early punches as they knocked down two big shots to take a 5-0 early lead. 

  • After Aquinas started on a 7-0 run the Golden Eagles offense erupted with 12 straight points highlighted by some strong shooting from Kayden Bird and a monster Levi Schultz dunk inside the paint. 

  • Right out of the first media timeout Kayden Bird buried his second deep ball of the game to swell the Cornerstone lead to 15-7 with 14 minutes left in the half. 

  • Colin Heyboer picked up right where he left off from the Golden Eagles last game with a strike from deep to give Cornerstone the 20-7 lead at the 12 minute mark. 

  • The Saints offense found another groove as they added three straight buckets to cut the lead to 20-13 at the midway point of the half. 

  • Aquinas refused to quit as they tied the ball game at 22-22 with nine minutes left on the clock. 

  • Kayden Bird and Andy Mora both tally buckets to regain the Cornerstone lead to 29-25 with five minutes remaining in the half. 

  • The Golden Eagles continued to find themselves in a battle with back and forth scoring as Blake Stewart capitalized on the fast paced move with a smooth midrange jumper to help CU control the 33-30 lead. 

  • Tre Seydel added his first score of the game with one minute remaining in the first half for the Golden Eagles which stretched their lead to five points. 

  • Cornerstone took a 36-32 lead into the halftime break looking to get back to winning ways with 20 more minutes to decide this rivalry matchup.  

Second Half

  • The second half started with fireworks for Kayden Bird who knocked down two more deep three point baskets for the Golden Eagles. 

  • Andy Mora added the next bucket for the home team as Cornerstone took an eight point lead after two and half minutes into the second half. 

  • Defense turned into offense through Andy Mora who collected the steal and outletted a perfect pass to Blake Stewart who threw down the slam and continued to build the lead for the Golden Eagles. 

  • The momentum could not be stopped for Cornerstone with Levi Schultz adding an acrobatic finish to secure a three point play the hard way as Cornerstone led 51-37 with 16 minutes left to play. 

  • Mark DeVries slipped through a screen on the next possession and laid in an easy bucket from Kayden Bird.

  • The Golden Eagles offense continued to flame as Blake Stewart rattled home a deep three to extend the lead to 56-39. 

  • Just before the first media timeout of the half Kayden Bird picked the pocket of the Aquinas guard to earn an and one foul bucket to give Cornerstone the 20 point advantage and score his 20th point of the night. 

  • The Golden Eagles ran the exact same play on back-to-back plays with perfect success as Andy Mora connected a cross court pass to Levi Schultz who knocked down two big three pointers with Cornerstone running away with this contest. 

  • It was a free throw battle near the midway portion of the second half, yet Cornerstone still held a 72-54 lead with 10 minutes left to play. 

  • Colin Heyboer and the squad could not be stopped as they continued the strong pace down the stretch now leading 83-62 with six minutes left to play. 

  • It was all Kayden Bird inside Mol Arena as he knocked down his sixth three point bucket this time from beyond the logo as he posted his 25th point of the game with five minutes left to play. 

  • Tre Seydel got in on the action once again with five more points of his own with Cornerstone on cruise control past this Aquinas squad up 91-70.

  • The Golden Eagles closed out this WHAC matchup with a 95-83 victory as they will look to take this same performance into their next matchup with Lourdes. 

 

By the Numbers

25 - Kayden Bird posted an impressive 25 point game shooting 6-7 from behind the arc. 

15/10 - Andy Mora also led the team in assists as he secured a 15 point 10 assist double double. 

18 - Blake Stewart also chipped in 18 points off another strong performance for the Golden Eagles.

The Golden Eagles next matchup comes against #RV Lourdes on Saturday, January 17th at 3:00 p.m. inside Mol Arena.
