Late Second Half Comeback Falls Short for Men’s Basketball

Grand Rapids, Mich. – Men's Basketball pressed on to their next WHAC matchup against the University of Northwestern Ohio to begin the year inside of the Mol Arena. The first half of play was a struggle for the Golden Eagles as they shot just 34.5% from the field and went into the locker room down 35-23. The second half saw Cornerstone come within six points of the Racers, but UNOH saw it out to the end inside of the Mol Arena winning 78-68 over the Golden Eagles. The Golden Eagles continue in conference play with a mid-week matchup at the University of Michigan Dearborn on the 7th of January at 7:30 p.m. in Dearborn, Michigan.

Game Highlights – Cornerstone – 68 UNOH – 78

  • First Half

    • The Golden Eagles were unable to breakthrough onto the scoreboard until about four and a half minutes into the game. Mark DeVries put up the first points for Cornerstone as they trailed 5-2.

    • Trenton Boike made his way onto the court and made his mark with a good three pointer to bring Cornerstone with one point 8-7.

    • Cornerstone tied it up with the Racers thanks to a three pointer made bby Colin Heyboer 14-14.

    • An 11-point run by UNOH saw them back to a strong lead about halfway through the first period of play 25-14.

    • Out of the Cornerstone timeout, Levi Schultz ended the run for UNOH with a layup for the Golden Eagles to make it 25-16.

    • The three pointer by Tre Seydel cut the deficit to just 10 with 40 seconds to go in the first half. Cornerstone were down 33-23.

    • The teams would head to their locker rooms with the Racers up by 12. The score was 35-23 at halftime.

  • Second Half

    • Another layup from Mark DeVries gave Cornerstone their first points of the half. UNOH were still up 39-25.

    • Two successful jumpers by Blake Stewart cut the Racers' lead down to 12 about three and a half minutes into the second half 41-29.

    • Kayden Bird hit his first three pointer of the game bringing Cornerstone within 9. UNOH still held the lead 41-32.

    • Two good free throws by Colin Heyboer saw Cornerstone hit the 40-point mark as they continued to trail to UNOH 53-40.

    • Kayden Bird hit an important three with about five and a half minutes to go in the game as Cornerstone still trailed 64-49.

    • Levi Schultz made his layup to cut the UNOH lead to just 13. The Racers still were on top 64-51.

    • A Blake Stewart layup brought the Golden Eagles within nine points of UNOH with about four minutes to go in the contest. The Racers were still ahead 64-55.

    • A big-man layup from Mark DeVries cut the UNOH lead down to just six points with just under three minutes to go.

    • A three pointer from the Racers kept them on top 67-59.

    • Two more free throws by Blake Stewart kept Cornerstone within seven of UNOH with about a minute and a half to play in regulation 70-63.

    • Myke Everingham hit a huge three pointer to keep Cornerstone's hopes alive near the end as UNOH still led by seven points 73-66.

    • Tre Seydel's good layup would be the last points for the Golden Eagles as they dropped another game at home to the Racers 78-68.

By the Numbers 

19/7/6 – Blake Stewart led the way for Cornerstone with 19 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists in the conference matchup versus the Racers.

15/7/100% – Mark DeVries put on his own decent performance inside of the Mol Arena with 15 points, seven rebounds, and went 6-6 from the field.

20% – Cornerstone was unable to get it going from beyond the arch in this contest as they went 6-30 from the three point line compared to UNOH's 12-24 (50%).
