Mid-Ranged Buzzer-Beater Surges Men’s Basketball to Victory

Lima, Ohio – Cornerstone Men's Basketball made their way down to Lima, Ohio to take on the Racers of the University of Northwestern Ohio. The Racers, coming into this contest, sat at ninth in the WHAC two spots behind the Golden Eagles. The previous meeting between these two teams saw Cornerstone take a tough 10-point loss 78-68 inside of the Mol Arena.

The Golden Eagles kept in close in the first half. The Golden Eagles went 18 for 37 from the field, making four three pointers in the first twenty minutes. The Racers held the lead at the end of the first half by two points 43-41 over the Golden Eagles. Both teams kept the fight going in the second half, trading the lead back-and-forth. Cornerstone had possession with ten seconds left on the clock as Blake Stewart went up for the mid-ranged jumper and watched it fall to give Cornerstone the win 86-84.

Men's Basketball will look ahead to their final away matchup in the regular season. They will take on the Saints of Aquinas inside of the Sturrus Sport and Fitness Center this Wednesday, February 18th at 7:30 p.m.

Game Highlights – Cornerstone – 86 UNOH – 84

  • First Half

    • Andy Mora drained the three pointer that got Cornerstone ahead 3-0 in the opening thirty seconds of play.

    • Kayden Bird hit his first three of the day to keep Cornerstone up by five points 8-3.

    • The Racers pulled it back and jumped ahead to a nine-point lead about five minutes into the half 19-10.

    • Blake Stewart and Colin Heyboer both hit their jumpers to bring it back within four points of UNOH who still led 21-17.

    • Kayden Bird sank another three pointer that made it a one-point difference between the two teams. UNOH remained ahead 27-26.

    • Blake Stewart tied it up with a made layup 30-30 at the five minute mark.

    • Another three pointer by Kayden Bird tied the game up once again with about three and a half minutes to play in the first half 35-35.

    • Kayden Bird drove in and made his layup but Cornerstone was unable to hold a lead at the end of the first half. The Racers remained on top 43-41.

  • Second Half

    • The scoring for Cornerstone in the second half began with a layup by Mark DeVries that kept Cornerstone within two points of the Racers 45-43.

    • Kayden Bird cut the Racers' 11-point lead back down to eight with a three pointer. Cornerstone trailed 54-46.

    • Levi Schultz made two layups in a row for Cornerstone to make it a two-possession game with under 14 minutes to play in the contest 56-52.

    • Colin Heyboer followed up two Levi Schultz free throws with a good three pointer that pushed Cornerstone to a four-point lead with under 12 to play 60-56.

    • A three point play by Mark DeVries kept Cornerstone in the lead by five-points 63-58 with about 10 minutes left in regulation.

    • Another layup by Mark DeVries extended the Golden Eagles' lead to six points 73-67.

    • The Racers brought it back to a one-possession game with about five minutes to go in regulation. Cornerstone remained on top 76-75.

    • Blake Stewart hit the jumper, which helped Cornerstone back to a three-point lead with under five to play 78-75.

    • A couple of stops by the Racers led to them retaking the lead with two minutes to go in the contest. UNOH were on top 81-78.

    • Blake Stewart sank the mid-ranged jumper which handed the lead back to Cornerstone with a minute and a half to go 81-80.

    • Cornerstone took a 30 second timeout as Levi Schultz hit his first of two free throws. Cornerstone had the lead 83-81 with less than 30 seconds left.

    • The Racers raced back down the court and hit the three pointer to tie it back up 84-84. Cornerstone took another timeout with ten seconds left.

    • Out of the timeout, Blake Stewart took control of the ball and jumped up with the mid-ranged shot. The ball rolled around the rim for a couple of seconds as the buzzer sounded and it fell through giving Cornerstone the victory over UNOH 86-84.

By the Numbers 

15/9 – Levi Schultz led the way for Cornerstone with 15 total points and coming up just shy of a double-double performance with 9 rebounds.

15/.636 – Mark Devries hit seven out of his 11 field goal attempts for a field goal percentage of 63.6%, grabbing 15 total points in the process.

14/.500 – Kayden Bird went 5-10 from the three point line and tallied 14 points on the day versus the Racers.

12/.600 – Finally, Blake Stewart sank the winning shot for Cornerstone and went 6-10 from the field as he put up 12 points for the Golden Eagles in the win over UNOH.
