Grand Rapids, Mich. – Men's Basketball comeback falls short losing heartbreaker to crosstown rival Aquinas 91-86. The Golden Eagles came back from multiple double-digit deficits throughout the game but could not hold onto to their late second half lead.
Andy Mora led CU with 22 points while
Mark DeVries grabbed eight rebounds which led the team. The Golden Eagles return home to face Indiana Tech on senior night and to close out the regular season on Saturday, February 21st at 3 p.m. inside Mol Arena.
Game Highlights – Cornerstone – 86 Aquinas – 91
First Half
- The Golden Eagles kept pace with the Saints to begin the game as two jumpers by Andy Mora and a layup from Levi Schultz made it a 7-6 game in favor of AQ.
- Aquinas got out to an eight-point lead but a layup by Mark DeVries followed by a jumper by Blake Stewart brought Cornerstone within four.
- The Saints proceeded to go on a run and extended their lead to 11.
- AQ continued to maintain a double-digit lead but a three from Levi Schultz and a layup by Andy Mora made it a 37-30 game with just under four minutes left in the half.
- Andy Mora finishes two layups and Blake Stewart got a jumper to fall which brough CU within six.
- A technical foul led by AQ led to Cornerstone getting within three as Kayden Bird sunk two free throws and Andy Mora drained one.
- Kayden Bird drilled a late three to send both teams to the locker rooms with Aquinas up 47-42 at halftime.
Second Half
- Cornerstone began the second half with a three from Levi Schutz and a layup by Andy Mora to make it a 52-47 game.
- Another layup by Andy Mora and a three from Colin Heyboer cut the AQ lead down to two.
- Mark DeVries got a layup to fall, and Blake Stewart finished a layup of his own to put CU within three making it a 61-58 game halfway through the second half.
- A three by Myles Steffen tied the game at 61 but two free throws by Levi Schultz and a jumper by Blake Stewart put Cornerstone ahead 65-62.
- Levi Schultz knocked down a three and paired it with a layup to extend the Golden Eagles lead to five.
- Cornerstone continued to hold their lead over the Saints as Mark DeVries finished a layup followed by two good free throws by Levi Schultz.
- Aquinas battled back to get within one with 3:17 left to play in the second half.
- The Saints retook the lead going up 85-82 with 1:18 left.
- Andy Mora finishes a three-point play making a layup and sunk his and one shot to make it a one possession game.
- The Golden Eagles comeback fell short as the Saints secured a 91-86 win.
