Senior Day Battle Ends in Defeat for Men’s Basketball


Grand Rapids, Mich. – Cornerstone Men's Basketball celebrated three seniors in Blake Stewart, Sam Koetsier, and Tre Seydel before their contest against the second-in-the-WHAC #RV Indiana Tech Warriors. The Warriors came into this contest 16-5 in conference play with an overall record of 20-6. The Golden Eagles held the seventh spot in the conference with an overall record of 12-15 and a WHAC record of 11-10.

The Golden Eagles kept in close in the first half, as they went 12-38 from the field to Indiana Tech's 12-30. The teams battled back and forth and would reach the halftime mark tied up 31-31. Cornerstone battled it out in a close contest against the Warriors in the second half, but some late-game three pointers could not save Cornerstone from the tough loss. #RV Indiana Tech took the win over the Golden Eagles on Senior Day 85-77.

Men's Basketball will look ahead to postseason play as they begin the WHAC Tournament next week. The Golden Eagles will face off, once again, against the Warriors, but this time on February 26, in Fort Wayne, Ind.

Game Highlights – Cornerstone – 77 #RV Indiana Tech – 85

  • First Half

    • Cornerstone dropped the first points of the game with a layup by Mark DeVries that put Cornerstone up 2-0.

    • Levi Schultz tied up the game 8-8 about four minutes in with a good layup for Cornerstone.

    • Kayden Bird knocked down the first three pointer for Cornerstone at about the 14 minute mark, Cornerstone held a seven-point lead 15-8.

    • Two good free throws by Blake Stewart kept Cornerstone up by three with about eight minutes to go in the first half of play 19-16.

    • Tre Seydel's three pointer kept the Golden Eagles up by seven points with under five minutes to go 27-20.

    • The layup by Mark DeVries kept momentum with Cornerstone nearing the end of the first half. Cornerstone led 29-25.

    • Two free throws by Myles Steffen sent Cornerstone to the halftime break tied 31-31 against #RV Indiana Tech on Senior Day.

  • Second Half

    • Mark DeVries grabbed the rebound and put it back up for a good layup. Indiana Tech held a marginal lead in the second half 34-33.

    • Levi Schultz drove in for a floater, as Cornerstone kept it within one point of the Warriors. Indiana Tech remained on top 36-35.

    • Kayden Bird went for the layup and made it. Cornerstone remained behind by just one point with about 15 minutes to play in regulation 40-39.

    • The three pointer by Levi Schultz found its way down the hoop. Cornerstone shot back up to the minor lead 44-43.

    • The Warriors battled back and grabbed a six-point lead with about 12 and a half minutes to go 50-44.

    • A huge dunk by Levi Schultz kept the contest close, but Indiana Tech remained in the lead 52-48.

    • Mark DeVries kept it going for Cornerstone down low with a good layup to keep the game within reach for the Golden Eagles. The Warriors led by 12 points 69-57.

    • A good pass by Andy Mora saw Blake Stewart hit a good mid-ranged jumper. The Golden Eagles remained behind in the game 71-59 with about four minutes to go.

    • The three pointer by Andy Mora sunk through, which brought Cornerstone within nine points of Indiana Tech 71-62.

    • Andy Mora hit another three pointer with two minutes left on the clock. The score remained in Indiana Tech's favor 75-65.

    • The Golden Eagles kept it rolling, as Andy Mora hit yet another three pointer as the time winded down. Indiana Tech had a seven-point lead 75-68 with 48 seconds on the clock.

    • The Warriors hit two free throws, but Blake Stewart got his layup to keep it a seven-point game with 40 seconds to go 77-70.

    • Tre Seydel hit a three pointer with less than 20 seconds to go in regulation. The Warriors remained on top of Cornerstone 81-73.

    • Andy Mora hit a last second jumper but the Warriors took down the Golden Eagles 85-77 inside of the Mol Arena on Senior Day.

By the Numbers 

17/9/4 – Levi Schultz led his team in total points with 17. Additionally, he put up nine rebounds and assisted his teammates a total of four times in the contest.

16/6 – Blake Stewart put up six assists on the day with 16 total points against the Warriors of Indiana Tech.

14/12 – Mark DeVries put up a double-double performance with 14 total points and 12 rebounds in the hard-fought defeat.
