Grand Rapids, Mich. – Baseball upsets the one seed University of Northwestern Ohio Racers in game one of the WHAC Tournament 7-4.
Andrew Meny led the Golden Eagles offense with two doubles racking up four RBIs.
Drew Goodman and
Andrew Eley combined for five runs and four hits while
Christian Burgess earned the win striking out nine Racers across four innings. Cornerstone will face the winner of Cleary vs Aquinas tomorrow at the Meijer Sports Complex with first pitch set for 12 p.m.
Game One Recap: Cornerstone – 7 UNOH – 4
- Cornerstone struck first as Andrew Eley singled, and Drew Goodman doubled to bring up Andrew Meny. Meny doubled down the left field line driving in two followed by a Luke Griffith single which brought Meny into score. A throwing error scored Griffith as CU took an early 4-0 lead.
- Josiah Stairs and the CU defense held UNOH scoreless through three as Stairs struck out two.
- The Golden Eagles added to their lead in the top of the fourth as Andrew Meny doubled to right field which brought Andrew Eley and Drew Goodman into score and gave CU a 6-0 lead.
- The Racers cut into the Cornerstone lead as a double to left field brought three across to score and made it a 6-3 game.
- UNOH made it a two-run game as a solo home run made it 6-4.
- Christian Burgess took over on the mound and struck out nine Racers in 4 dominant innings.
- In the top of the ninth, Cornerstone loaded the bases with one away, Corbin Westerkamp walked in a run to grow the Golden Eagles lead to 7-4 before UNOH got out of the inning.
- Connor Comiskey shut the door in the bottom of the ninth, striking out the second batter he faced and induced a 6-4-3 double play to end the game.
