Men's Soccer Falls 3-0 to Spring Arbor in Season Opener

Spring Arbor, Mich. – Men's Soccer opened the 2026 season with a 3-0 loss to Spring Arbor on Thursday, August 20th. Luke Philo made 10 saves while in goal for the Golden Eagles holding the Cougars scoreless through the first half. Jack VanEyk led CU with two shots while Isaac Wood had the only shot on goal for Cornerstone. Men's Soccer will be back in action on Wednesday, August 26th as they host Huntington University for the home opener with kickoff set for 4 p.m.

Game Recap: Cornerstone – 0 Spring Arbor – 3

First Half:
  • The match opened with a shot on goal by the Cougars saved by Luke Philo 1:30 into the game.
  • Luke Philo saw more action in net for Cornerstone as he made back-to-back saves in the 9:44 and 12:21 minutes.
  • The Golden Eagles got their first shot on goal off the foot of Isaac Wood but was saved by the Spring Arbor keeper.
  • Seth Vigil hit a header towards the goal at 18:32 but his shot went wide right.
  • CU's Luke Philo recorded his third save of the first half in the 20th minute to keep the game scoreless.
  • The first half came to close with Cornerstone's Luke Philo making another save to keep the game tied going into the second half.
Second Half:

  • The Cougars made it 3-0 over Cornerstone with a goal in the 58th minute.
  • SAU fired back-to-back shots in the 62nd minute with one saved by Luke Philo and the other blocked.
  • A yellow card in the 64th minute against the Cougars led to a CU shot by Jack VanEyk that was sent wide left.
  • Spring Arbor fired a shot high in the 89th minute and that would close out the game.
