Men's Soccer Falls in Tight Battle Against Huntington in their Home Opener

Grand Rapids, Mich. – Men's Soccer dropped their home opener to Huntington University 2-1. Steven Stidham scored the lone goal for Cornerstone in the first half. Luke Philo made eight saves with Justin Hirwa and Isaac Wood each having two shots. Men's Soccer will be back in action on Saturday, September 5th as they travel to Mishawaka, Indiana for a match against #13 Bethel with kickoff set for 3:30 p.m.

Game Recap: Cornerstone – 1 Huntington – 2

First Half:
  • The match opened with Huntington firing a shot on goal 1:50 into the match with Luke Philo earning his first save.
  • Cornerstone answered with a shot of their own as Isaac Wood sent a shot on goal but was saved by the Huntington keeper.
  • The Foresters struck first 3:21 into the game firing a shot into the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead over CU.
  • Huntington made it 2-0 in the 13th minute with a shot fired into the back of the net.
  • At 19:02 in the first half Jackson Dowdle was given a yellow card leading to a shot on goal by the Foresters that was saved by Luke Philo.
  • Freshly subbed in, Steven Stidham fired a shot past the Foresters goalkeeper to get CU within one and made it 2-1 in the 29th minute.
  • Huntington answered with two shots wide of the goal.
  • Cornerstone ended the half with shots by Steven Stidham and Stephen JoPaul both unable to find the back of the net sending the game to halftime 2-1 in favor of the Foresters.
Second Half:
  • The second half started with a yellow card being handed out to the Foresters leading to a shot by Isaac Wood that went wide left.
  • Huntington responded with a shot of their own that was saved by Luke Philo and CU answered right back with a shot by Seth Vigil that went wide right.
  • Cornerstone received another yellow card, this time to Mason Heyboer but the Foresters would get nothing out of it.
  • The Golden Eagles were unable to generate many chances late in the half despite multiple corner kicks.
  • Huntington received another yellow card in the 88th minute which would close out the game with the Foresters securing a 2-1 win over the Golden Eagles
