Fort Wayne, Ind. – Women's Volleyball suffered two losses at the Onset Tournament to open their season. In the first game, CU fell to #RV Taylor in four sets,
Josilyn Potter led the team in kills with 12 while the
Gabby VerBerkmoes had ten kills and three kills with her sister
Gwyn VerBerkmoes totaling 11 kills and two blocks. Cornerstone faced Loyola New Orleans in game two where they fell in five sets.
Gwyn VerBerkmoes led game two with 20 kills while
Josilyn Potter had 14 kills, 11 digs and four service aces. Women's Volleyball continues play at the Onset Tournament with games against #20 Midland University and Ohio Chrisitan University on Saturday, August 22nd.
Game Recap – #21 Cornerstone – 1 #RV Taylor – 3 (25-21, 21-25, 18-25, 21-25)
First Set: Cornerstone – 25 Taylor – 21
- The match began with Cornerstone getting out to a 6-1 lead with kills from Gabby VerBerkmoes and Gwyn VerBerkmoes.
- An ace by Ava Ford and multiple kills from Aubrey Johnson added to the Cornerstone lead as they went up 10-4
- The VerBerkmoes sisters continued to lead the charge as Gabby and Gwyn get three more kills and team up for a block to make it 17-10 first set in favor of CU.
- After calling a timeout, Taylor went on a run, cutting the Cornerstone lead to four, forcing the Golden Eagles to call a timeout of their own.
- Cornerstone continued to hold their lead as Aubrey Johnson, Gabby VerBerkmoes and Gwyn VerBerkmoes each record a kill to make it 23-18.
- The Golden Eagles take set one as Gwyn VerBerkmoes got the final two kills to make it a 25-21 win.
Second Set: Cornerstone – 21 Taylor – 25
- The second set started as a back and forth battle as kills from Gwyn VerBerkmoes, Ally Kragt and Aubrey Johnson tie the Trojans at five.
- Three errors by Taylor aid the Golden Eagles in taking a 9-8 lead in set two.
- The Trojans went on a run to take a 15-12 lead over CU forcing Cornerstone to take a timeout.
- Ava Ford gets an ace while Aubrey Johnson collects another kill to keep Cornerstone within three of the Trojans.
- After falling six points behind, Cornerstone got three straight points with errors by Taylor and a kill from Josilyn Potter leading the Trojans to take a timeout.
- Josilyn Potter and Gwyn VerBerkmoes each recorded a kill, but Cornerstone couldn't complete the comeback in set two falling 25-21.
Third Set: Cornerstone – 18 Taylor – 25
- The third set began as a back and forth battle once again, but two kills from Gabby VerBerkmoes gave Cornerstone a slight edge taking a 6-5 lead.
- Attack errors by both sides along with a kill by Ally Kragt keep it close as set three is tied at ten.
- The Trojans went on a four-point run as they took a 14-10 lead forcing CU into a timeout.
- After going down by five, the Golden Eagles fought back to within two as Josilyn Potter recorded a kill and an ace with Gwyn VerBerkmoes and Gabby VerBerkmoes tallying kills making it a 17-15 game in set three.
- Taylor went on a six-point run highlighted by two service aces and took a 23-15 lead over Cornerstone.
- The Golden Eagles got three-straight points off kills by Ally Kragt and Aubrey Johnson along with an error by the Trojans to get them within five.
- Taylor took set three by a score of 25-18 giving them a 2-1 set lead going into the fourth set.
Fourth Set: Cornerstone – 21 Taylor – 25
- The fourth set started Josilyn Potter getting two kills and a service ace by Dyllan Hannah which put Cornerstone up 6-5.
- Miley Southland and Aubrey Johnson keep the Golden Eagles ahead as they each record a kill to make it 9-7.
- Aubrey Johnson collects two more kills paired with another by Josilyn Potter to put CU up by four.
- Cornerstone continued to hold their lead as Kaelyn Sohre got two kills, but Taylor answered back with a three-point run to get within one.
- Kills by Josilyn Potter, Gabby VerBerkmoes and Aubrey Johnson keep CU in the game as they tied the Trojans at 19 in set four.
- Taylor went on a 6-2 run to end the fourth set 25-21 and winning the match three sets to one over Cornerstone.
Game Recap – #21 Cornerstone – 2 Loyola New Orleans – 3 (22-25, 25-11, 25-18, 20-25, 10-15)
First Set: Cornerstone – 22 Loyola – 25
- The match began with Cornerstone taking a 7-4 lead with three kills from Gwyn VerBerkmoes and two by Josilyn Potter.
- Loyola fought back as they went on an 8-1 run to take a 13-10 lead over the Golden Eagles.
- Cornerstone battled back within three with kills by Gabby VerBerkmoes and Kaelyn Sohre along with errors by Loyola which made it 20-17.
- The Golden Eagles went on a five-point run with two kills by Aubrey Johnson to get CU within one and made it a 23-22 game.
- Loyola ruined the Cornerstone comeback as they got two straight points to take a set one victory.
Second Set: Cornerstone – 25 Loyola – 11
Third Set: Cornerstone – 25 Loyola – 18
- The third set began as a close battle, but CU got the slight edge with multiple kills by Gwyn VerBerkmoes to make it 6-5 in favor of Cornerstone.
- Josilyn Potter added a kill and a service ace while Gabby VerBerkmoes recorded two kills to grow the CU lead to four.
- The Golden Eagles continued to extend their lead as Aubrey Johnson contributed a kill and a service along with three kills by Josilyn Potter to make it 19-15 in favor of CU.
- Gabby VerBerkmoes and Gwyn VerBerkmoes each picked up a pair of kills to give Cornerstone the set three win 25-18.
Fourth Set: Cornerstone – 20 Loyola – 25
- The fourth set saw Cornerstone get out to a 6-4 lead as Gwyn VerBerkmoes tallied two kills along with Gabby VerBerkmoes and Josilyn Potter adding a kill each.
- Loyola battled back and took a 10-9 lead before Cornerstone tied the game at 13 with two kills by Josilyn Potter.
- The back-and-forth battle continued with Loyola gaining the advantage and took a 19-18 lead.
- Loyola continued their run taking a 24-18 lead. Cornerstone responded with two points on kills from Aubrey Johnson, but the CU comeback fell short as Loyola took set four.
Fifth Set: Cornerstone – 10 Loyola – 15
- The fifth set began with Loyola taking a 6-4 lead over the Golden Eagles.
- Loyola grew their lead with four straight points and made it 11-7.
- Cornerstone added three more points, but Loyola closed out the fifth set 15-10 and took a 3-2 set victory over Cornerstone.
