Aubrey Johnson Clears 1000 Career Kills in 3-0 Defeat Over Defiance

Grand Rapids, Mich. – Women's Volleyball headed to the Mol Arena to host the Yellowjackets of Defiance College. The first set was tight, as teams traded points back-and-forth throughout, Cornerstone inched just ahead to take set one over Defiance 30-28. The second and third set saw Cornerstone take over, as they took down Defiance in the next two sets 25-12 and 25-10 respectively. The Golden Eagles continue with conference play on the 16th of September at Rochester Christian. The game will take place at 7 p.m. inside of the Garth Pleasant Arena in Rochester Hills, Mich.

Game Recap – #RV Cornerstone – 3  Defiance – 0 (30-28, 25-12 25-10)

First Set: Cornerstone – 25 Defiance – 16

  • Cornerstone went ahead to an early lead off a kill by Gwyn VerBerkmoes that put the Golden Eagles up 6-1.

  • Defiance nudged their way back into set one, but the kill by Payton Hutchinson kept Cornerstone on top 11-7.

  • The Yellowjackets tied up the set and took the lead 12-11, as the battle continued in set one.

  • The kill by Aubrey Johnson tied the set back up 13-13.

  • The set remained tied up thanks to a kill by Josilyn potter 15-15.

  • Gwyn VerBerkmoes put a kill away that put Cornerstone at set point 24-23.

  • The first set remained back-and-forth as Defiance kept tied up the set. The defining moment came when two attack errors by the Yellowjackets handed a hard-earned set win to Cornerstone 30-28.

Second Set: Cornerstone – 25 Defiance – 12

  • After a long set one, Cornerstone went into the second set with a new resilience as they went ahead by five-points early on thanks to another kill by Aubrey Johnson 8-3.

  • Another kill by Aubrey Johnson kept Cornerstone up in set two of action 10-4.

  • Josilyn Potter's kill helped Cornerstone remain on top by nine points midway through the second set 15-6.

  • The Golden Eagles held a 13-point lead in the set 22-9 after a Yellowjacket attack error.

  • Josilyn Potter cleaned up the set with a kill that ended set two for Cornerstone 25-12.

Third Set: Cornerstone – 25 Defiance – 10

  • The Yellowjackets fought back early in set three, keeping the set tied 3-3 with Cornerstone.

  • A three-point run for Cornerstone set them on the front-foot with the score 7-3.

  • The Golden Eagles jumped to a 10-point lead in set three after another mistake by Defiance cost them the point.

  • Aubrey Johnson put another kill away that helped Cornerstone to a 12-point lead 17-5.

  • Another big play by Gabby VerBerkmoes kept Cornerstone moving along well in set rhee after her kill put them at set point 24-7.

  • The final point for Cornerstone came off of a service error by Defiance College, as Cornerstone completed the home sweep 25-10.

By The Numbers:

16/1000 – Aubrey Johnson led the way for Cornerstone on the attack with 16 total kills, breaking the 1000 career kill mark for the junior outside hitting in the second set.

9/.438 – Gabby VerBerkmoes put down nine kills in the matchup, with an attacking percentage of .438 in the win.

6/5 – Kaelyn Sohre helped highlight her performance with six total blocks, along with five kills to round out a solid freshman performance.

37/3 – Payton Hutchinson kept it going from the setter position with 37 total assists and three service aces.

The Golden Eagles continue with conference play on the 16th of September at Rochester Christian. The game will take place at 7 p.m. inside of the Garth Pleasant Arena in Rochester Hills, Mich.
