Denison and Brisson-Fast lead Women’s Soccer to 2-1 win

Box Score

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Cornerstone Women's Soccer team got an early goal from Mykayla Denison (FR/Muskegon, Mich.) only to see Marygrove tie it up late but a goal with just seven minutes to play from Lexie Brisson-Fast (JR/Ferndale, Mich.) helped CU escape with a 2-1 win. The victory lifts CU to 9-2-2 on the season while they are now 4-2-0 in league play and in a tie for third. CU will travel to No. 19 Davenport next Wednesday for a 7 p.m. kick against the Panthers.

Playing their first game since a 1-0 setback at Aquinas last Saturday, the women's soccer team came out quick and after dominating possession for the first 12 minutes, finally broke through on a goal from Mtkayla Denison to lead the Mustangs 1-0. A few other chances in the opening half were just off the mark as the ball only crossed midfield a handful of times.

CU looked to add to their lead in the second half but the Mustangs did much better in controlling the ball in their own end and then MC broke through in the 73' when they scored on a loose ball in the box, beating CU keeper Allison Snowden (SO/Kalamazoo, Mich.) to tie the match at 1-1.

Looking as if the night would go into overtime, junior Lexie Brisson-Fast played a ball off her head and by the Marygrove keeper on a beautiful pass from Denison to take the 2-1 lead with just under seven minutes to play. Marygrove did threaten once more but the play by defenders Kate Wiegman (SR/Wheaton, Ill.) and Teigan Mitcham (JR/Grand Rapids, Mich.) allowed CU to escape with the 2-1 victory.

Cornerstone now will travel across town to rival Davenport on Wednesday, October 22 where they will face the No. 19 ranked Panthers at 7 p.m.
