Grand Rapids, Mich. – The season opener did not go Cornerstone's way as they fell 6-3 at home to Olivet Nazarene on a cool and windy night at DeWitt Field. Cornerstone mustered up nine hits but left the bases loaded two times early while three errors in the field allowed ONU to take an early lead. CU will play a second game against the Tigers Saturday morning at 11 a.m.
Game Flow…
Olivet Nazarene scored one run in the first inning and that was all the scoring until the sixth inning when they added on with two more runs. CU threatened early while leaving the bases loaded in both the second and third innings.
The Golden Eagles responded to score two in the seventh off of a triple by Travis Gordon (SR/Lowell, Mich.) that scored Evan Wagner (JR/Port Huron, Mich.) and a sacrifice fly by Adam Harvey (SO/Antioch, Ill.) that brought Gordon home bringing CU within one run. An error in the seventh inning by the Tigers opened up an opportunity for Wagner to hit a single through the right side to score Jacob Klemme (SR/Plymouth, Wis.) which tied the game at three.
Olivet Nazarene responded in the eighth with three runs and that was enough to hold on to the win against the Golden Eagles.
