Volleyball concludes perfect weekend with 3-1 win over Siena Heights

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles won their second straight game with another four-set victory, this time defeating Siena Heights at home. CU dominated all but the third set and are now above .500 at 9-8, 6-3 WHAC on the year. Cornerstone will continue their home stand Wednesday vs. Concordia for staff appreciation night inside Mol Arena. 
 
Game Recap – CU – 3 SHU – (25-17, 25-20, 26-28, 25-20)
  • Cornerstone went on an 8-2 run that proved to be the difference in set one as a kill by Bailey Cummings capped it off getting the Golden Eagles out to a 15-9 lead. CU held the lead and won the set on a kill by Hannah Stearns to win 25-17. 
  • The Golden Eagles trailed early in set two behind the strong play of SHU's Janel Ruhlman as the Saints got out to a 12-10 lead. 
  • SHU added to their lead with a 6-0 run to go up 18-12, but CU responded with a 14-2 run to take a two-set lead with a 25-20 victory. Alexis Angus saw five kills in the run to help the Golden Eagles come back. 
  • The third set was the longest the Golden Eagles have played all season, falling 28-26. Both teams traded runs in the set but a ball handling error by Kayla Clark gave the Saints the victory to cut the deficit to 2-1. 
  • CU responded well in the fourth, scoring six of the first eight points in the set behind a pair of kills from Jackie Stanko
  • Kaylee Dykema recorded the match point kill to cap off one final 4-0 run to help the Golden Eagles win set four 25-20 and the match 3-1. 
 

By the Numbers 
  • Cornerstone had a season third best 12.0 blocks in the match that included 3.0 from Alexis Angus and 2.5 from Jackie Stanko
  • Kayla Clark and Kaley Vaughn split time at the setter position today, as Clark recorded 27 assists and Vaughn had 13.
  • Jackie Stanko recorded a career high 16 kills to lead the Golden Eagles on the day. 
 

What's Next?
Cornerstone will play one more WHAC match before hosting a non-conference tournament next weekend as they take on Concordia on Wednesday, October 9 at 7 p.m. inside Mol Arena.
