GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles continued a six-game home stand with their third consecutive win defeating Concordia 26-24, 25-14, 18-25, 25-21 to move to 10-8, 7-3 WHAC on the year. Cornerstone has now gone 34-0 against the Cardinals dating back to the 2001 season. CU will take a break from conference action this weekend as they will host the Cornerstone Classic where they will play three matches in two days starting with vs. IU-South Bend on Friday at 4 p.m.
Game Recap – CU – 3 CUAA – 1 (26-24, 25-14, 18-25, 25-21)
- After being tied 6-6 early in set one, Concordia scored three consecutive points to take a 9-6 lead.
- Cornerstone responded to take an 11-10 set lead with back-to-back kills from Jackie Stanko.
- The Golden Eagles held the lead for the remainder of the set, until Concordia came marching back to tie it at 24. However, a CUAA attacking error and an Olivia Keelean kill would cap off the set one win for Cornerstone at 26-24.
- After a slow start in set two, the Golden Eagles dominated going on a 7-0 run to end the set at 25-14 highlighted by three service aces from Kayla Clark.
- Cornerstone got off to their best start in set three with a 7-2 lead behind two kills from Bailey Cummings.
- Concordia refused to quit though responding with a 12-2 run to take the lead and eventually win the set 25-18 on a kill from Delaney Bennett.
- The Cardinals continued their momentum into set four taking a 7-4 lead thanks to some Cornerstone attacking errors.
- CU later went on a 4-0 run to go up 17-12, highlighted by a Jackie Stanko kill.
- Concordia made one final push to cut the deficit to as low as three, but the Golden Eagles pulled out set four 25-21 to win the match 3-1.
By the Numbers
- Concordia was great defensively throughout the match recording 104 digs as a team.
- Bailey Cummings led CU with 17 kills on the match, which is the third most for her this season.
- Kayla Clark and Kaley Vaughn split time at the setter position as Clark recorded 32 assists and Vaughn had 12.
- The lone senior Hannah Stearns got some action in the match playing in one set and recording two kills.
- Cornerstone is now 34-0 vs. Concordia dating back to 2001.
What's Next?
Cornerstone will host the Cornerstone Classic where they will play three non-conference opponents inside Mol Arena starting with IU-South Bend on Friday at 4 p.m.
