CHICAGO, Ill. – The Golden Eagles got off to a strong start in Chicago as they opened their season Friday night, earning a 3-1 win over Saint Francis (Ill.) and a 3-0 win over (RV) Saint Xavier. Head Coach
Megan Lenhart is 2-0 in her debut at the helm of her alma mater as the Golden Eagles start 2-0 for the first time since 2017. CU will pick up action with two more games tomorrow vs. (24) Marian and (RV) Trinity Christian College at 1 p.m. & 3 p.m. EST.
Game One – Cornerstone - 3 Saint Francis - 1 (25-21, 25-17, 15-25, 25-22)
- Cornerstone got off to a fast start in set one, getting a 6-2 lead highlighted by a Patsy Morris service ace.
- Bailey Cummings recorded five first set kills to help CU win the set 25-21.
- The Golden Eagles got off to another fast start in set two scoring 15 of the first 24 points to lead 15-9.
- Saint Francis responded with four straight points to force CU into a timeout and cut the score to 15-13.
- Cornerstone came out of the timeout with nine consecutive points capped off by an Alexis Angus kill that led to a 25-17 set victory.
- Errors haunted the Golden Eagles in set three, as the Saints would go on a 9-2 run to end the set and win 25-15.
- Cornerstone capped off a match that saw eight service aces, with three in set four to win the match 25-22.
- Freshman Olivia Keelean recorded her eighth kill on match point to give the Golden Eagles a season opening win over Saint Francis (Ill.)
Game Two – Cornerstone - 3 #RV Saint Xavier - 0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-23)
- After trading points early in set one, SXU would go on a 6-0 run to take a 14-8 set lead and force CU into a timeout.
- Cornerstone responded with their own 6-0 run out of the timeout, thanks to five Saint Xavier errors. The Golden Eagles would hold on to win the set 25-22 behind three kills from Olivia Keelean.
- The Golden Eagles then dominated set two getting out to a 7-2 lead behind two service aces from Bailey Cummings and eventually won the set 25-16.
- Cornerstone saw plenty more service aces in set three, for a total of seven in the match with three from Eleyna Zichterman and three from Bailey Cummings. CU won set three 25-23 to take the match handedly.
