Volleyball suffers first WHAC loss at Madonna

LIVONIA, Mich. – The Golden Eagles dropped their first conference loss of the 2019 season 3-1 in a tough road match at Madonna in the Activities Center. Cornerstone got off to a slow start, but rebounded to win set two before Madonna took over in the final two sets to win the match and remain undefeated in conference play. CU drops to 4-6 on the year and 1-1 in WHAC play as they will get set for two more WHAC matches this weekend back home inside Mol Arena. 
 
Game Recap – Cornerstone – 1 Madonna – 3 (20-25, 25-23, 16-25, 20-25)
  • After the two teams went back in fourth with a few runs in the first set, errors cost the Golden Eagles as Madonna would go on to win 25-20. 
  • CU hit just .143 in set one. 
  • Cornerstone came out with a bang in set two with a 5-0 run that was capped off by a kill from Jackie Stanko
  • The Golden Eagles then increased their lead to 10-2 with a kill from Bailey Cummings
  • Madonna hung in despite being down 24-18, but Bailey Cummings finally ended it with a kill to tie the match at a set a piece.
  • Madonna dominated the third set with a 5-0 run and a pair of 4-0 runs to win the set 25-16 and take a 2-1 set lead. 
  • Cornerstone led early in set four with a 6-0 run that saw five attacking errors from the Crusaders. 
  • Madonna responded later in the set to take a 19-17 lead and eventually win 25-20 on an attack error by Kayla Clark

What's Next?
Cornerstone returns home for a pair of WHAC matches this weekend vs. Indiana Tech and Northwestern Ohio. CU will play IIT first at 7 p.m. on Friday and Northwestern Ohio on Saturday at 5 p.m. Both games will be the Go for Gold Childhood Cancer games where CU will be collecting wish list items to donate to Helen DeVos Children's Hospital.
