GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles rebounded to end their four-game losing skid with a sweep of Thomas More before getting swept by undefeated Indiana Wesleyan. Cornerstone and first year Head Coach
Megan Lenhart earned their first win inside Mol Arena to move to 3-5 on the year. Next up for CU will be the conference opener vs. rival Aquinas on Wednesday at 7 p.m. Cornerstone Student Life will be providing snacks to students in attendance for the rivalry match.
Game One – Cornerstone – 3 Thomas More – 0 (26-24, 26-24, 25-23)
- Cornerstone trailed by as many as four in set one and faced set point twice, but a pair of kills from freshmen Patsy Morris and Olivia Keelean helped the Golden Eagles pull out the first set 26-24.
- Once again, the Golden Eagles saw themselves down four points late in the second set at 21-17.
- CU ended set two on a 9-3 run highlighted by kills from Olivia Keelean, Jackie Stanko, Brooke Nicholson, Bailey Cummings, and Alexis Angus to win 26-24.
- After leading much of the third set, Thomas More would come back to tie it at 22 after an attacking error by Alexis Angus.
- Angus responded however with a crucial kill to take the lead back and win the set 25-23 to earn the match sweep.
- Cornerstone recorded a hitting percentage over .200 in every set of the match for the first time in 2019.
Game Two – Indiana Wesleyan – 3 Cornerstone – 0 (10-25, 18-25, 23-25)
- After a Brooke Nicholson kill scored the first point of the match, the undefeated Wildcats took it to the Golden Eagles in set one, using a 10-0 run to win 25-10.
- Another strong start in set two by IWU helped them control play, taking a 13-2 lead and eventually winning 25-18.
- Cornerstone found their stride in the third set, getting out to a 5-2 lead with three consecutive kills from Olivia Keelean, Jackie Stanko, and Alexis Angus.
- The success continued as Olivia Keelean recorded a service ace to push the lead to 18-15 and force Indiana Wesleyan into a timeout.
- IWU was strong out of the timeout going on a 3-0 run to tie the match set at 20-20.
- The Wildcats would go on to win set three 25-23 to earn the sweep and stay undefeated.
